Early life

Burnett was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Burnett, the middle child of three brothers, began training at St Patrick's College, a Roman Catholic secondary school on the Antrim Road, before heading to Gerry Storey's Holy Family Boxing Club, a gym known for uniting boxers of many religious and political origins. Burnett and Paddy Barnes have always trained here alongside opponents from unionist backgrounds, such as Carl Frampton, who have helped break down boundaries in their community over the years.

Ryan Burnett Career

Amateur career

Burnett has an amateur record of 94 victories and four losses; he continues to "dispute the majority of the losses." Burnett won seven All Ireland titles and four Ulster titles, as well as several multi-nations tournament medals, while ranked No. 1 in the AIBA World Youth amateur rankings. His silver and gold medal medal victories at the World Youth Championships and Olympic Youth Games were among his amateur achievements, respectively. Burnett suffered a back injury that barred him from participation for a year, limiting his chances at the senior level after earning those medals. Burnett decided to go professional not long after regaining fitness.

Burnett secured five fights in seven days on his way to the final of the World Youth Championships in Baku. In the first three rounds, he defeated Erik Sokolov of Germany, 4–0, Manuel Fabrizio of Italy – 3–1, and Colombia's Rober Estrada Barrera – 16–4. Mark Anthony Barriga, a Filipino fighter who defeated the Philippines 6–4 victory, was in the quarter-finals. He defeated Cuban fighter Yosvany Veita in a 5-3 victory in the Semi's. In the final, Burnett met Salman Alizade, a local Azerbaijani. After a difficult week for Burnett, the home favourite emerged, netting Burnett with a silver medal.

Burnett captured gold at the inaugural Olympic Youth Games in 2010, becoming the first ever Youth Olympics boxing gold medalist in the process. Burnett defeated Zohidion Hoorboyev of Uzbekistan in the semi-finals of the tournament, which took place in Singapore. Burnett met Salman Alizade, whom he had lost to in the World Championships, once more in the semifinals. Alizada started the competition as the world number one, but Burnett retaliated with a convincing 13–6 win.

Professional career

Since signing a contract with Hatton Promotions in January 2012, Burnett became a professional in January 2012. Ricky Hatton, the current world champion, then migrated to Manchester, England, where he would be trained by the company's founder.

Burnett was forced to leave the stable in September 2014 after Hatton Promotions was enduring turbulent times. After a long time out of action, he joined Adam Booth in London to kick-start his pro career.

Burnett was denied a shot at the vacant British bantamweight crown in November 2015 against former holder Jason Booth. Despite being dealt with a first-round knockdown over a veteran Brit, Burnett was still beaten by a unanimous decision. Burnett will face Carl Frampton, a Belfast boxer, on the undercard of his world championship unification bout with Scott Quigg at the Manchester Arena on January 27, 2016. Anthony Settoul, a Frenchman, was defeated by Burnett for the WBC International bantamweight title. Burnett earned the fight by a majority vote after a highly lauded appearance.

Burnett would face Lee Haskins for the IBF bantamweight championship on June 10th in Belfast, live on Sky Sports. Haskins' third defense since winning the title in 2015. "I always dreamed of headlining in Belfast, and now I have the opportunity to do it for a World Championship," Burnett said. Burnett won his first world championship and became Northern Ireland's first world bantamweight champion in 20 years after a 12-round split decision. In round 6, Burnett knocked Haskins down twice and then again in round 11, knocking him down twice. Both fighters were barred from a match of heads in round 2. Burnett's final judges' scores were 119-107, 119-107 for Haskins, and 118-108 for Haskins. Judge Clark Sammartino, who had rated Haskins' fight, later changed the result to a unanimous verdict. Haskins had the most success in the first two rounds, but Burnett took over the game and led until the end. "I think a new star is born in Belfast," promoter Eddie Hearn said after the fight. Burnett won by a 12 round unanimous vote tonight, according to me. "I'm going to talk to Adam Smith tomorrow." "He will not be returning to this country, and I will be telling the IBF," British Boxing Board of Control chief Sammartino said. Zolani Tete, the WBO beltholder, called out Burnett for a unity bout, claiming he was happy for it to take place in Belfast.

Although Burnett did not accept Tete's bid, he nevertheless wanted to fight WBA Undisputable champion Zhakiyanov (17-1, 18 KOs) at the SSE Arena in Belfast on October 21. Ricky Hatton, who also worked with Burnett, was Zhakiyanov's manager and helped him win the WBA championship against Rau'shee Warren on February 10. Burnett won a close 12 round unanimous decision over Zhakiyanov to become the ununified IBF and WBA bantamweight champion in front of a large pro-Burnett crowd. Burnett's 118-110, 119-109, and 116-112 were all in favour of Burnett. Both fighters battled closely together, with Zhakiyanov getting the best of the exchanges at the start of the fight. Burnett's jabb was getting a wide range by round 5 and finding it was more effective. Burnett was doing the best job on the inside and landing the cleaner shots towards the end.

Emmanuel 'Manny' Rodriguez (17-0, 12 KO) and his crew attempted and failed to reach an understanding with former champion Lee Haskins in January 2018, where the winner would have been promoted to the Interim IBF championship, causing the IBF to order purse bids between Rodriguez and Burnett. The purse auction was set for 12 February. Eddie Hearn was still in negotiations with Venezuelan boxer Yonfrez Parejo (21-2-1, ten KOs), who is also the WBA's mandatory), when the purse was announced on March 31 in Cardiff, where he was fighting Joshua vs. Parker undercard. "The IBF called an interim title match between Emmanuel Rodriguez and Lee Haskins, so we went back to fight our WBA-mandatory Parejo," Hearn told Sky Sports. We were told last week that the [Rodriguez-Haskins] match will no longer happen and that Rodriguez's staff [was] not able to negotiate, and that immediate purse bids were rejected. Our Parejo agreement was already in place, so we'll vain our IBF title and resume our WBA-mandated obligations." Burnett defeated Parejo on February 12th, as a result of the match. Burnett won the WBA over 12 rounds, retaining his WBA title in the process. Burnett got off to a good fight before Parejo began to strike more from round 3. Burnett used technique and defense, making Parejo miss often. Burnett was cut in round 7 after a clash of heads in his left eye. Burnett did not slow down and he continued to out-work Parejo. Parejo was not strong enough to win the close rounds either, so he did not do enough to qualify. In round 3, Burnett suffered a right hand injury. Burnett won by 120-108, 120-108, and 116-112 over the three judges.

The World Boxing Super Series announced on May 9, 2018 at a news conference in London, that season 2 would feature the bantamweights. Burnett, along with WBO champion Zolani Tete and IBF champion Emmanuel Rodriguez, were among the first three boxers to win the tournament.

On July 20, 2018, the draft gala in Moscow took place. In the quarter finals, Burnett, a top seed, selected former world champion Nonito Donaire (38-5, 24 KOs). To qualify for the tournament, Donaire had dropped two weight divisions. On September 7, the WBSS announced that a doubleheader would take place at The SSE Hydro in Glasgow on October 3rd. Burnett will face Donaire in the quarterfinals of the Super-lightweight tournament, which will see Scottish boxer Josh Taylor face American boxer Ryan Martin. As Donaire returned to round 3 and started to box smarter, Burnett seemed to have won the first two rounds. Burnett landed for his lower back after throwing a combination of punches and being counted as a knockdown for Donaire during round 4. Burnett made it to the round but forgot to answer the call for round five. Burnett dropped out of the WBSS tourney due to his WBA belt and was booted out of the competition. Donaire demonstrated his love for Burnett by heading to his corner rather than celebrating the victory. In the ring, Burnett was welcomed and later stretched out. After taking a left hook by Donaire 2:25 into the round, the injury occurred in his right internal oblique, where he tore muscle fibers. Burnett, who suffered with back pain in the past, said the injury was not career-threatening.

Burnett confirmed on April 11 that he would return to the ring on an MTK Global show at Belfast's Ulster Hall on May 17th. For the vacant WBC International super-bantamweight title, Jelbirt Gomera (14-5, 7 KOs) was expected to be his opponent for the return bout. Burnett said he was aiming to become the world champion by two weights. The card will be shown live on ESPN+ in the United States as part of MTK's endorsement of Top Rank. Burnett signed a multi-fight contract with Top Rank on May 29th, ahead of his return.

Burnett was sharper, quicker, and more accurate than Gomera, with numerous body shots on him. Gomera told the referee that the body shots had been below the belt line, for which the referee cautioned Burnett twice. Gomera protested again and turned his back, causing the referee to call off the match immediately and award Burnett the TKO victory.

Burnett resigned from boxing due to persistent injuries on October 25, 2019. "Although my retirement is prompted by injuries, I have a deep sense of joy and admiration," Burnett said.
