Josh Kelly Career

Professional career

Kelly's first fight as a professional was a six-round victory (59-55) over Jay Byrne (4-1) of Dublin, who had been in the Olympics on the undercard of Ricky Burns vs. Julius Indongo.

Kelly defeated Jony Vila (6-1) of Spain and Gateshead's Tom Whitfield (4-1) in the fourth round, a tie after each in the first round. In May, the Vila fight took place at the Barclaycard Arena in Birmingham, Birmingham, although the Whitfield match took place at the Walker Activity Dome in Newcastle, with his battle being the main event.

Kelly ended the year with a record of 5-0 after victories over Mexico's Jose Luis Zuniga (13-2-3), and France's Jean Michel Hamilcaro (25-8-3), who were defeated by second-round stoppage and sixth-round stoppage respectively in October and December. These fights took place at the SSE Arena in Belfast and London's York Hall.

Kelly defeated Ray Robinson, who was ranked No.3 in the WBC and #15 by the WBO at welterweight, on June 1, 2019. Kelly was ranked #9 by the WBA at welterweight. The game was still tense and ended in a majority draw, with one scorecard going in favour of Kelly, 96-94, while the other two read 95-95 twice.

Kelly defeated Wiston Campos in his nascent war. Kelly was struggling with Campos at times, but ultimately won the match by unanimous vote, scoring 99-90, 99-90, and 98-91 on the scorecards.

Kelly defeated top welterweight David Avanesyan, who was ranked #6 by the IBF, #7 by the WBA, #9 by the WBA, and #10 by the WBO at the time, in his next fight. Avanesyan proved to be the best man on the night, finishing Kelly within six rounds.
