Rosario Isabel Dawson (born May 9, 1979) is an American actress and singer.

In the 1995 independent drama Kids, she made her debut in a film.

She Got Game (1998), Josie and the Pussycats (2001), Men in Black II (2004), Rent (2005), Unstoppable (2010), and Top Five (2005).

Dawson has also done voice-overs for Disney Warner Bros., DC Comics, and Viacom's Nickelodeon unit. Dawson received the Satellite Award for Best Supporting Actress – Motion Picture for her appearance in Top Five; she was nominated for the Critics' Choice Movie Award for Best Actress in a Comedy for her role in Rent. Dawson has also appeared in comic book adaptations, including Gail in Sin City (2005) and Barbara Gordon / Batgirl in The Lego Batman Movie and Barbara Gordon / Batgirl (2014), as well as her appearance of Claire Temple in five Marvel/Netflix films: Daredevil (2017–2018), Jessica Jones (2015), Luke Cage (both 2017).

Early life

Dawson was born in New York City on May 9, 1979. Isabel Celeste, her mother, is of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origins. Isabel was 16 or 17 years old when Rosario was born; she never married Patrick C. Harris, Rosario's biological father. When Rosario was a child, she married Greg Dawson, a building worker. Isabel and Greg then moved into a reclaimed building on 544 East 13th Street after being approved as part of an affordable housing program. The family then migrated to Texas.

Personal life

In an interview with Conan O'Brien, Dawson discussed both her brother's and her love of Star Trek, as well as her knowledge of several Klingon terms.

Dawson adopted a 12-year-old girl in 2014.

Dawson revealed in March 2019 that she was in a friendship with US Senator Cory Booker. In February 2022, their union came to an end.

Dawson wrote a post on Instagram that was widely mocked as she came out as queer; when asked about it in a 2020 interview, she said that it had not been her intention and that "people kept saying that I [came out]... I didn't do that, but I didn't do it.... I mean, it's not inaccurate, but it never came out. Well, I suppose I am now...I haven't had a career in that space, so it's not like I am getting a call from me." Dawson's representative later told The Daily Beast that she meant to say she came out as an ally of the LGBTQ community.
