Early life
Dawson was born in New York City on May 9, 1979. Isabel Celeste, her mother, is of Afro-Cuban and Puerto Rican origins. Isabel was 16 or 17 years old when Rosario was born; she never married Patrick C. Harris, Rosario's biological father. When Rosario was a child, she married Greg Dawson, a building worker. Isabel and Greg then moved into a reclaimed building on 544 East 13th Street after being approved as part of an affordable housing program. The family then migrated to Texas.
Personal life
In an interview with Conan O'Brien, Dawson discussed both her brother's and her love of Star Trek, as well as her knowledge of several Klingon terms.

Career
Dawson made a brief appearance on Sesame Street as an infant. She was discovered on her front-porch step by photographer Larry Clark and Harmony Korine, with Korine deciding she was destined for a role in his controversial 1995 film Kids. She went on to appear in a variety of films and blockbusters, including Rent, He Got Game, and Men in Black II.
Dawson gave the first voice-over for Prince's remixed version of "1999." In the next to last year, the voice-over was a reflection on the world's state before the new millennium.
