Rocky Bleier Life

Robert Patrick "Rocky" Bleier (born March 5, 1946) is an American football player.

In 1968 and 1980, he was a National Football League (NFL) halfback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as well as 1970 and 1980.

Early years

Bleier, the oldest of four children of Bob and Ellen Bleier, who operated Bleier's Bar but the family of six lived above it, was born and raised in Appleton, Wisconsin. As a youth, he took a paper route and graduated from Xavier High School in 1964, where he competed in football and basketball. Bleier, a three-time all-state pick in football, was a three-time selection as a running back and has received all-conference recognition at both linebacker and defensive back. He was a team captain in football, basketball, and track.

Bleier played college football at the University of Notre Dame, Indiana, and graduated in 1968 with a degree in business administration. The Fighting Irish won the national championship in 1966, and he was a team captain as a senior in 1967. He was chosen by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 16th round of the 1968 NFL/AFL Draft, finishing 417th overall.

Rocky Bleier Career

NFL career

In 1970, Bleier rejoined the Steelers in camp. He couldn't walk without being ill, and weighed only 180 pounds (82 kg). He was on injured reserve for the season, but he returned in 1971 and played on special teams. He spent many seasons trying to get more playing time, and was suspended on two occasions. Bleier, on the other hand, said he worked really hard so that "some time in the future you won't have to ask yourself "what if?" Bleier returned to 212 lb (96 kg) in the summer of 1974, and he was in the Steelers' starting lineup thanks to his offseason training program.

Since Preston Pearson was wearing number 26 (the number Bleier wore in his rookie season before going to Vietnam), Bleier moved to number 20 when he returned to the team. Bleier retained the number 20 after being traded to the Dallas Cowboys in 1975, with which he had been identified.

Bleier, the second of the Steelers' rushing weapons, was also a good lead blocker, but he was still deadly at both blocking and rushing. Both Harris and Bleier rushed for over 1,000 yards in 1976, making this the second NFL team to do so after the 1972 Miami Dolphins' Mercury Morris and Larry Csonka.

Bleier was in the first four Steelers Super Bowl victories and had the touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw that gave Pittsburgh a lead that it would never relinquish in Super Bowl XIII. In the closing seconds, he recovered Dallas' onside kick, securing the Steelers' victory.

Bleier retired after the 1980s, with 3,865 passing yards, 136 receptions for 1,294 yards, and 25 touchdowns. He was the Steelers' fourth all-time leading rusher at the time of his retirement.
