Elvin Lamont Bethea (born March 1, 1946) is a former American football defensive end who played his entire career with the Houston Oilers.
He played for North Carolina A&T State University and was the first person from that school to be elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, having been inducted in 2003.
Career
Bethea was born in Trenton, New Jersey, and she played football and track at Trenton Central High School. In 1964, he set a new Jersey state record in the shot put, 66 feet 4.5 inches, which stood until 1997. At the Golden West Invitational track meet in 1964, he won the shot put and discus tournaments.
Bethea played in 210 games, including a stretch of 135 consecutive, during his time in Houston. He started playing defensive end and guard in the 1968 season and didn't miss a game until breaking his arm in a game against the Oakland Raiders in 1977. He was fired six times by the team's chief, finishing his career with 105 unofficial firings.
With 16 sacks, his career was high, which now ranks as the best in Oilers/Tennessee Titans history, a feat that is even more impressive by the Oilers' 1-13 record. Bethea's 1976 numbers of 14+1 2 sacks, but the Pro Bowl was not selected. In a 1976 match against the San Diego Chargers, he had four sacks (his career high) and one fumbled.
In 1969, he had 14+12 sacks. 1970 and 1971 with 10+12 sacks in each, 1975 with ten and 1978 with 8. He appeared in 1978 and 1979 in the AFC Championship game.
