Club career

Gagliardini, a native of Bergamo and a Sicilian mother, began his work at Atalanta youth teams and later for the reserve team. For the 2013–2014 season, he was drafted into the first-team squad.

Gagliardini made his professional debut on December 4th, beating Sassuolo 2–0 in the campaign's Coppa Italia.

He was loaned to Cesena's Serie B side in a 6-month loan agreement on January 17, 2014. In a 3–1 away win over Varese on January 25, he made his Cesena debut as a replacement, replacing Guido Marilungo in the 74th minute and one minute later, he scored his first career goal. Gagliardini played his first full match for Cesena against Virtus Lanciano on February 2nd. In the 67th minute of a 1–0 away victory over Modena, Gagliardini was sent-off with a double yellow card. Gagliardini's six-month loan to Cesena had 21 apparences, including 16 as a starter and one goal. He was instrumental in the team's promotion to Serie A.

He was loaned to Spezia's Serie B side on a season-long loan agreement on September 1, 2014. He made his Spezia debut in the 68th minute over Frosinone as a replacement. Gagliardini played his first complete match for Spezia on January 24, 2015, scoring his first goal in the 55th minute of a 1-1 away draw against Frosinone. Gagilardini's season-long loan to Spezia came to an end with 14 appearances and 1 goal.

Gagliardini moved to Vicenza on loan, with the possibility to buy on September 29. In the second round of Coppa Italia, he made his Vicenza debut against Cosenza on August 9th in a match that was won by penalty 4–2 against Cosenza. Gagliardini was dismissed by Giovanni Sbrissa in the third round of Coppa Italia on August 15, the 78th minute of a 1–0 away victory over Empoli. In a 1–0 away win over Modena on September 6, he made his Serie B debut for Vicenza. In the 24th minute of a 2–1 away victory over Trapani, Gagilardini scored his first goal for Vicenza in the 24th minute. Salvatore D'Elia replaced him in the fourth round of Coppa Italia on December 3rd, a 2–1 away loss to Carpi. Gagliardi finished his loan to Vicenza with 19 appearances and 1 goal.

He made his Serie A debut with Atalanta on May 15, 2016 with a 2–1 victory over Genoa on the final match-day of the 2015–16 season. He was promoted to the starting lineup in the first half of the following season, making 13 more league appearances for the club.

Gagliardini joined Inter Milan on loan in January 2017, but there was a promise not to buy in the summer of 2018. He was unveiled two days later, where he was assigned the squad number 5 (previously worn by Felipe Melo, who left Inter in the same transfer window). Gagliardini made his Inter debut against Chievo at San Siro on January 14th, winning the Nerazzurrri's fifth straight league victory. In a 5–1 victory over Cagliari on March 5th, he scored his first goal for Inter. Gagliardini scored against his parent club Atalanta in a 7–1 loss by Inter on the following week.

International career

Gagliardini was called up to the Italy under 20 team on February 28, 2014. He made his under-21 debut with the under-21 team under new manager Luigi Di Biagio in a friendly match against Hungary that ended in a 0–0 draw.

Following an injury to Claudio Marchisio, Gagliardini was called up to the Italian senior squad for the first time by head Gian Piero Ventura in November 2016.

Gagliardini and four other players were in the 35th minute of Italy's 2–1 friendly away win over the Netherlands on March 28th; he came off the bench to substitute the injured Daniele De Rossi.

In June 2017, he was included in Italy's Under-21 squad for the 2017 European Under-21 Championship, which was supervised by Di Biagio. Following a 3–1 loss, Italy was knocked out by Spain in the semi-finals on June 27, 2013, when Gagliardini was dismissed.
