Personal life
Castro was born in Houston, Texas. His father is from Peru, and his mother comes from Costa Rica. Jenny Lidback, the nephew of former LPGA Tour golfer Jenny Lidback, is Castro. Castro has two younger brothers, both of whom played collegiate golf as well. Alex Castro played for Georgia State University from 2007-2011, and his younger brother Franco Franco began his LSU journey before heading to Charlotte in 2012. Castro and his partner Katie live in Atlanta, Georgia, with their two children. He is a member of Ansley Golf Club.
Amateur career
Castro played college golf at Georgia Tech. He was voted first-team All-American in 2005, second-team All-American in 2007, and first-American in 2004 and 2006. During his four years at Georgia Tech, he was named ACC Rookie of the Year in 2004 and was selected to the All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) team every year. The 2007 Puerto Rico Classic was a major event for him. He received the Byron Nelson Award in 2007, which is rewarded to the country's best senior golfer.
Castro was the captain of the United States Palmer Cup team that defeated Europe 14–10. He was also a member of the 2006 team that lost 191–412.
In 2008, Castro was given the coveted NCAA Top VIII Award.
Professional career
Castro competed on the eGolf Professional Tour from 2007 to 2010 and won five events during that time. He appeared in 12 events on the Nationwide Tour in 2010 and finished in runner-up at the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open. He spent four top-10 finishes and ranked 23rd on the money list in 2011, which was good enough for a PGA Tour card for 2012. At qualifying School, he finished 13th, boosting his rank. Castro shot 63 on the first day of The Players Championship, beating the course record set by Fred Couples (1992) and Greg Norman (1994). In June 2013, Castro finished third, three strokes behind Bill Haas at the AT&T National, his best finish on the PGA Tour in June 2013. After losing in a playoff against James Hahn, he came in 2nd in 2016.
