Robert "Rob" Kearney (born 26 March 1986) is an Irish rugby union rugby player who plays fullback for UCD, Leinster, and Ireland.
He also played rugby for Clongowes Wood College and Gaelic football for Louth in the All-Ireland Minor Football Championship as a youth.
Early life and education
Kearney was born and raised on a dairy farm in County Louth's Cooley Peninsula. He started participating in athletics at an early age, like many of his peers. Gaelic football is the most popular sport in the area. Kearney played Gaelic for Naomh Mhuire and in the Cooley Kickhams underage program before graduating to the Cooley senior football team in 2004 and Louth at a minor level.
Kearney's secondary education was obtained at Clongowes Wood College in County Kildare. After his Leaving Certificate, he enrolled in University College Dublin, where he studied Arts. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in April 2010.
Personal life
Kearney is the third of five Kearney children; he has an older brother, Richard, a younger brother Dave (who plays for Leinster), and a sister, Cara. Ross' older brother was killed in 1988 after an accident aged 6 years old.

Club career
Kearney was a student at University College Dublin on a sports scholarship where he competed for the rugby team. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics in 2010. In 2005, he was instrumental in the U-20s winning the McCorry Cup, defeating Dublin University Football Club in the final.
In 2018, Kearney was given the UCD Alumni Award in Sport for the first time.
Kearney played for Leinster both schoolboys and U-19 levels before going on to represent them as a senior. In a pre-season friendly victory over Parma, he scored a hat-trick of tries on his debut for Leinster.
In 2005, he made his Celtic League debut for Leinster, defeating the Ospreys 22-20. Felipe Contepomi, the usual place kicker, made 32 appearances in the competition, scoring eight goals in eight attempts, with three more on the game in September 2006. In a 19–22 loss at Bath at the RDS on October 22, 2005, Kearney played in his first Heineken Cup match. It was the first of ten appearances scoring ten tries in the process. He was a member of Leinster's Heineken Cup winning team in 2009 but missed the 2011 final due to injury. He was named ERC Player of the Year for 2012 on May 21, 2012, the day after Leinster secured their second straight Heineken Cup. He started all nine European matches scoring six times during the 2011–12 season.
On September 24, Kearney announced that he would be leaving Leinster.
It was announced in late September 2020 that Kearney had signed a one-year deal with Australian side Western Force. In an 11-27 loss to the Brumbies on February 19, 2021, Kearney made his Force debut in an 11–27 loss. International career
Kearney competed in Ireland at the schoolboy and U-19 level, and in the 2006 Churchill Cup, he toured Ireland with Ireland A.
Kearney was first called into the Irish training squad for 2005's autumn internationals, but did not participate. He was named in Argentina's 2007 summer tour and scored his first cap against Argentina on June 2nd, 2007, defeating Argentina by 16-0. He scored two tries in the 2008 Six Nations Championship, one against Scotland and another against England. He was a member of the drivacious Ireland team that defeated the 2009 Six Nations Championships, Triple Crown, Grand Slam, and Grand Slam. In the first minute of a game, one of Kearney's most notable events was a high tackle incident involving Andrea Masi of Italy. The occurrence was seen as an indication of the danger that Kearney posed in attack. Kearney's career lasted almost a year from November 2010 to August 2011, due to a knee injury that necessitated surgery.
Kearney was chosen for the first game against the United States but he was not able to attend any of Ireland's other matches, losing by Wales, 22–10. Kearney was selected in the Ireland squad for the 2012 Six Nations Championship and named in the starting team to face Wales in the first round. He appeared in all the other games, with Ireland finishing third in the table. In the 2018 summer series, Kearney was also in the first Irish rugby team to defeat Australia on Australian soil. Kearney was selected in the British & Irish Lions squad for the 2009 tour to South Africa. In the 26–21 first test loss in Durban, he made his Lions debut as a replacement. Kearney was chosen again for the second test in Pretoria due to a Lee Byrne injury. In a 28-25 loss, he scored the Lions' only try. He then participated in the final test in Johannesburg, which the Lions won 28–9.
