Early years
Sexton was born in Rathgar, Dublin, but he has family connections to North Kerry and West Clare; he is the nephew of former Garryowen, Munster, and Ireland rugby player William Sexton's uncle. In the dying moments of St Mary's College's 2002 Leinster Senior Schools Cup final victory, he scored a drop goal. Sexton was selected for Leinster thanks to his appearances at St. Mary's. In 2006, he made his Border Reivers debut.
