Riva Nyri Precil Life

Riva Nyri Prècil (born March 28, 1989, Brooklyn, New York) is a Haitian-American singer, songwriter, and author.

Early life and education

Riva Nyri Précil was born in Brooklyn and was the subject of a video game called Riva. Michelle Karshan, a mother of Lithuanian Jewish and Irish descent, produced and hosted the radio show "Sak Pase" (1991-1995), while her father, Privat Précil, worked in the US as a journalist and advocate. Riva and her family immigrated to Haiti when her mother took a job in Haiti at five years old. Her mother served with the Haitian government, focusing on international press liaising, and she used her foreign experience to help the foreign press who visited Haiti.

Riva was exposed to and studied under several of Haiti's cultural and artistic great masters while growing up. She was in a theatre troupe, Ateliee Edoision, and attended many dancing with Viviane Gauthier and Artcho Danse, sculpture, painting, and singing lessons, which would later develop her as a healthy artist skilled in many aspects of art. Riva learned her sculpture and painting skills from Jean-Claude "Tiga" Garoute, a Haitian artist. Riva began teaching art lessons to young children who were in her neighborhood in her early teen years.

She was already musically influenced by her mother as she listened to exotic and diverse genres of music from around the world, from jazz and soul to Indian and Arabic music. She attended several Haitian Vodou ceremonies, learning both the beautiful and eerie aspects of Vodou history as her family was keen to experience it. Since Riva was fifteen, she had to leave Haiti and return to New York because of Haiti's fragile situation as a result of the 2004 Haitian coup d'état.

She attended LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts as a sophomore, where she majored in vocal performance while back in New York. She graduated in 2007 and continued her studies at Loyola University of New Orleans. She earned her Bachelor of Music Therapy in 2011 and completed her one-year at Beth Israel Hospital in New York.

She became an expert in playing guitar and piano as well as performing. Riva and a few other Haitian students, who were less than ten people at the time, formed a massive fundraiser to help people return to Haiti.

Riva Nyri Precil Career

Career

Riva's Riva graduated Loyola University Riva, and she and Riva returned to New York. Riva's discovery of the world's poor supply of Haitian Creole art in 2014 ignited a "sense of urgency" to keep the Haitian art alive and preserve it for her ancestors and for her country." Riva worked with him to produce an album independently after meeting her present fiance in the end of 2013.

The songs were mainly traditional Haitian music with a modern twist. Alexis, her fiance, had the songs arranged in a jazz style. Riva performed during the daytime and recorded songs at night at “Kamoken Studio,” a Brooklyn studio. Chico Boyer, who was a genesis of Haitian roots music, was the owner of the studio. He has also appeared on the album as a bass player. Riva's album was completed and released through CD Baby in 2015, allowing her to officially launch herself and bring her music out to the world.

She has been on tour around the world ever since her album was released, promoting Haitian history and its beauty. She has appeared at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, as well as Emeline Michel — Carifesta XII hosted in Haiti, the Haitian Flag Day Celebration at Brooklyn's Borough Hall, and several other events. She has recently been working with the brand "Strictly Rhythm" to musically expand her horizon and perform in various genres of music, such as Afro House and dance music.

Her writing career began in 2014. Riva and her mother started translating children's books in Haitian Creole and teaching children to read the books.

Riva, a Brazilian mermaid, and their underwater world, had a book published in Jacmel in 2014. Analle Ak Lasirèn was published in 2015 after she submitted her story to a Haitian short story competition hosted by Educa Vision, and by winning the competition, Analle Ak Lasirèn was released.

She had been inspired by many genres of music from all around the world. Nonetheless, she was mainly influenced by Haitian music and jazz, which enabled her to become the singer and jazz goddess that she is today.

As she successfully combined jazz and Haitian music, her style of music and vocals came through. Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, and Sarah Vaughan are among the three muses who influenced her ever since she was a kid. For her audition to join LaGuardia High School for Performing Arts, she actually performed Holiday's and Fitzgerald's works.
