Riqui Puig's father, Carlos, was also a footballer. A left-back, he spent his entire career representing Terrassa.
Club career
Puig, born in Matadepera, Catalonia, participated in FC Barcelona's youth academy La Masia, which was part of UFB Jàbac Terrassa. After progressing through the youth program, he made his senior debut with the reserves on February 24, 2018, versus Marcus McGuane in a 1–1 home draw against Gimnâstic Tarragona in the Segunda División championship.
Puig's contract with Barça ran until 2021, and he was promoted to the B-team in the Segunda División B. In the 55th minute of a 4–1 home routing of Cultural Leonesa, he made his first-team debut on December 5th, replacing fellow youth graduate Oriol Busquets; he also assisted Denis Suárez, Barcelona's fourth goal scorer.
Puig made his La Liga debut on April 13, 2019, starting and playing 67 minutes against Huesca in a 0–0 draw. He scored his first goal for Barça B on September 14th, his second in a 2–2 home draw against AE Prat.
Puig was promoted to the first team on October 6, 2020, carrying the number 12 jersey that had previously been worn by Rafinha. He scored the winning penalty in the 3–2 penalty shootout victory after a 1–1 draw with Real Sociedad in the Supercopa de Espaa semi-finals on January 13-13. He scored his first goal for the first team in a 2–0 away victory in La Liga against Elche on September 11, just eleven days later. He scored his second goal from a Frenkie de Jong assist.
Puig failed to get minutes under new manager Ronald Koeman during the 2020–21 season. He received even less playing time under new manager Xavi in the upcoming season than under his predecessor.
With Barcelona reserving the right of repurchase and half of any future sale, LA Galaxy's targeted Allocation Money (TAM) was decided on August 4, 2022. He has been on a three- and-a-half year contract until the 2025 season. In a 3–3 draw at home to Seattle Sounders FC, he made his Major League Soccer debut 15 days later, falling in the 62nd minute for another former Barcelona youth product, Vázquez.
Puig scored his first goal for the team on August 31 in a 2–2 draw away from Toronto, equalizing distance. In their 4–1 victory over Colorado Rapids on September 18, he had three assists, becoming the first MLS player to reach three assists in a single match since 2014.
