Trevino began his career in 1993 with the introduction of his debut single "Just Enough Rope," the first mainstream country music single to have separate English and Spanish versions.
The song appeared on his debut album Dos Mundos; a year later, a self-titled album followed.
Trevino has charted a total of fourteen singles on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart and has released seven studio albums.
"Running Out of Reasons to Run," his most popular song, "Running Out of Reasons to Run," debuted at No. 8. In 1996, there was 1 on the charts.
Early years
Trevino, a Mexican immigrant, is the son of Ricardo Trevino, Sr., a Tejano performer, and Linda Chavez. He began taking piano lessons at the age of five and began his music career. He plays rhythm guitar as well as keyboards.
Trevino graduated from Westwood High School in Austin, Texas. Although Trevino was given a baseball scholarship to Memphis State University, he preferred to study music at Texas A&M University. When he was a student, he performed his brand of country music in local clubs. Paul Jarosik, a Sony brand ambassador, was trapped in Austin due to flood conditions in December 1991 and visited a small club where Trevino regularly played. Although Trevino was not performing that evening, the representative saw several articles on the wall that praised Trevino. Trevino's music was handed over by staff of the club, who gave the label representative a tape of Trevino's music. Buckingham went to Austin just to see Trevino perform and sign him to Sony. Trevino left school to pursue his music career.
Columbia Nashville's first album, Dos Mundos, was almost entirely Spanish country music on premise. Trevino, who is not a native Spanish speaker and needed lessons before he could record the album, was dissatisfied with the decision. "I didn't like it a bit because I didn't want people to believe I was a Tejano artist...Everybody agrees that I'm a Tejano singer bringing the country style to the United States." The album was deemed gold (selling over 500,000 copies).
Rick Trevino, Sony's first English album, was released seven months later in 1994. Rick Trevino was named gold (selling over 500,000 copies) and had hits including "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry" and "Doctor Time." On September 7, 1993, he released "Just Enough Rope" ("Bastante Cordón"), his debut single. On Rick Trevino and in Spanish on Dos Mundos, a Spanish version of the song combining the two languages was also available on radio. In both English and Spanish, this was the first mainstream country single to be released. "She Can't Say I Didn't Cry," Trevino's first chart-topper, spent one week at the top of the Gavin Report country singles charts, became Trevino's first chart top.
Looking for the Light, the follow-up English album, was released in 1995 and featured the top-ten hit "Bobbie Ann Mason," which was included in the top ten. Un Rayo de Luz, Trevino's Spanish version of the album, also called "A Ray of Light").
He formed Los Los Angeles, Freddy Fender, Ruben Ramos, and Flaco Jimenez in the late 1990s, and created the superstar group Los Super Seven. In 1998, the group received a Grammy Award for Best Mexican-American Music Performance on their self-titled debut album. Canto was released live on DVD in 2001 and Heard It On The X in 2005 (both albums featured Raul Malo of The Mavericks, among others).
Learning as You Go was Trevino's first and only Billboard Number One single on "Running Out of Reasons to Run" on the Radio & Music Chart and No. 2 on the Billboard Country Chart, with "Learning as You Go" debuting at #1 on the Radio & Records Chart and #1 on the Billboard Country Chart in 1996. On the Billboard Country Chart, "I Only Get This Way With You" ranked at #7. Learning As You Go illustrated a separate Spanish-language version, titled Mi Vida Eres T ("My Life Is You"), as well as Searching for the Light.
Trevino decided to leave Sony in the hopes of embarking on a new musical direction. Sony refused to fire him from the deal, and Trevino dropped a new album and released "Only Lonely Me" on August 18, 1998. Sony promised to unleash Trevino before the album was announced, but the album was shelved. Trevino was on compilation CD Tribute To Tradition (released on Columbia) with a cover version of "City Lights" (#1 country classic seen by Ray Price in 1958).
Trevino went on tour and released Mi Son, a Spanish-language album that contained only ballads and gave no hint at his country music roots. Trevino's touring schedule slowed, though no new album or record deal was signed, and the bulk of his band resigned.
Trevino first started working with Raul Malo, the frontman of country band The Mavericks, during this period. The two had met while recording their second Los Angeles Super Seven album. Trevino's performances attracted producer Paul Worley, who helped Trevino land a deal with Warner Brothers, who brought him to the attention of producer Paul Worley.
Trevino wanted to do a country record with a Latin touch to it for his forthcoming album, In My Dreams. Except for the final track, a cover of Bryan Adams' "Have You Ever Really Loved a Woman," he wrote or cowrote every song on the album except for the last one. "In My Dreams" became a single and stayed on the charts for twenty weeks, falling just shy of the Top 40 on the Billboard country charts, falling just shy of the Top 40. Trevino was dissatisfied with the final rankings, but he said the album "opened a lot of doors for me." People took me a bit more seriously than 'Bobbie Ann Mason.'"
Separate Ways, Trevino's Warner Brothers single released on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart, fell short of the top 40, and the planned release of the Whole Town Blue album was postponed. In My Dreams / Whole Town Blue, his previous album on Warner's label, was subsequently released on a CD. In 2009, Oh Ven, Emanuel, a Christmas album, was self-released and is now available on his website as of 2016. In 2010, Los Lobos' "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights" was released as a single.
