Life and career
Riordan was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas. He graduated from Alamo Heights High School and first attended the music program at North Texas State University, aspiring to be a guitarist. He enrolled at the University of Texas and studied English and History. He obtained his teaching certificate at the University of Texas in San Antonio. At Presidio Hill School in San Francisco, he taught English and Social Studies for eight years.
On the couple's shared birthday in 1985, Rick married Becky Riordan. They have two sons, Haley and Patrick. In June 2013, they moved from San Antonio to Boston, together with their older son Haley, who attended Boston College.
Riordan has written several hit book series. The Shamus, Anthony, and Edgar Awards were awarded to Tres Navarre, an adult mystery film about a Texas private eye.
He conceived the Percy Jackson story as bedtime stories about ancient Greek heroes for his son Haley. Haley had been diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia, triggering Riordan to make the titular protagonist hyperactive and dyslexic. In 2005, Riordan published The Lightning Thief, the first book in the series. Four sequels followed, with the last, The Last Olympian, in 2009. Riordan had written the Tres Navarres series, a series of mystery novels for adult readers, prior to Percy Jackson.
The titular twelve-year-old discovers he is the modern-day son of the ancient Greek god Poseidon in Percy Jackson & the Olympians. Between 2010 and 2013, 20th Century Fox acquired the film rights and released two feature film adapations. Following Percy Jackson's success, Riordan created The Kane Chronicles, which features a modern-day Egyptian pantheon and two new sibling characters, Sadie and Carter Kane. The Heroes of Olympus is also a Riordan sequel to Percy Jackson's The Heroes of Olympus.
Riordan also contributed to the creation of The 39 Clues, the children's book series. On September 28, 2008, he wrote several of its books, including The Maze of Bones, which debuted on the New York Times Best Seller list. He also contributed to the Puffin Classics edition of Roger Lancelyn Green's Tales of the Greek Heroes, in which he claims that the book inspired him to write his Greek mythology book.
Riordan co-wrote the pilot for the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series on Disney+ in 2022 and is currently serving as an executive producer for the series. Disney had previously owned Fox in 2019, allowing it to publish Percy Jackson's stories.
