Hatch was charged with tax evasion and jailed for not paying taxes on his winning sum after his Survivor win of $1 million. He served a 51-month term in federal prison. Hatch and his partners had argued that the trial and conviction were flawed because the IRS never launched an inquiry into his 2000 and 2001 tax returns and never found that any particular amount of taxes was due. He served an additional nine months in jail for failing to update his 2000 and 2001 tax returns after being released from jail.
Following his Survivor victory in a public auction in 2013, Hatch in Sydney, Nova Scotia, was included in a tax auction. Hatch had not paid property taxes on the property for a period of more than six years, according to the CBRM tax department.
