Smith earned a bronze medal at the 2008 World Junior A Challenge and was drafted in the third round, 69th overall, by the Dallas Stars in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft.

Smith made the RedHawks his junior season, where he scored a career-high 30 goals in 39 games. Smith was named a Hobey Baker Award finalist, First-Team All-America, and finalist for the RBC Financial Group CCHA Player of the Year as a result of his success.

Smith resigned from his final year in Miami on March 25, 2012, when he signed a three-year, entry-level deal with the Dallas Stars. He made his NHL debut against the Edmonton Oilers on March 28, 2012, and skated for five shifts. In the 3–1 loss, Smith had 4:05 minutes of ice time and one shot on target. San Jose defeats the Boston Bruins in 11th straight games for the first time since the Boston Bruins in 1965

www.dailymail.co.uk, November 6, 2023
The San Jose Sharks were bad in 2022-23, but nothing could have prepared them for the ferocious ineptitude they would see in the early stages of this season. Not only did the team lose 10-2 to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday night in San Jose, but the loss was also the second straight game in which the Sharks gave double digits in goals. And, if that's worse, they tied an NHL record with their 11th straight loss as they fell to 0-10-1 on the year. In 2021-22, only three other NHL teams have lost their first 11 games: the 1943-19 Arizona Coyotes, the 2017-18 Arizona Coyotes, and the Coyotes. The Boston Bruins were the first team to score 10 or more goals in a row. On Thursday, the Sharks lost 10-1 to the Vancouver Canucks.

Stuart Skinner scored four goals on 17 shots in two periods, and Jack Campbell stopped all four shots he encountered in the third.

Semyon Varlamov, the Islanders' goaltender, somehow denies Reilly Smith with an amazing paddle block

www.dailymail.co.uk, January 29, 2023
Semyon Varlamov, the goalkeeper for the New York Islanders, stretched his left arm to make a spectacular save on Vegas Golden Knights left winger Reilly Smith. Varlamov's goalie stick came out after a cross-crease pass from William Carrier with 14:11 seconds remaining in the second period. Varlamov, a former tipped the puck as the pass came to Smith, preventing it from falling into the net in an amazing save-of-the-year caliber effort.
