Early life
Dr. Bennett Preston was born in Detroit, Michigan to Cheryl Gomez, a Puerto Rican mother, and Dr. Bennett Preston, an African American father. Kyle, her younger brother, lives with her.
Bennett Preston, Gomez-Preston's father, is a Philadelphia medical examiner/pathologist. When Gomez-Preston was a child, she worked with the Detroit Police Department. Cheryl Gomez was one of the first women to be sent to street patrol. She commenced a sexual harassment lawsuit against the Detroit Police Department, which she won, earning an award between $800,000 and $1.2 million as a result of verbal abuse, wordless epithets, murder threats, and a commanding officer who expressed an interest in a relationship with her. Cheryl Gomez and the family migrated from Little Rock, AR, to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. At Philadelphia's Freedom Theatre, Gomez-Preston was involved in acting, dancing, and singing lessons. Her parents were eventually divorced. She and her mother and brother Kyle moved from Philadelphia to Los Angeles in 1994 to ensure an acting career.
Personal life
In 1995, Gomez-Preston first started dating model DeWayne Turrentine. Turrentine was a member of the hip hop duo Quo. On November 10, 1999, the couple married. They have two children, Scarlett Annette Turrentine (born May 13, 2007), and Tyger Attila Turrentine (born April 2, 2011).
Career
Gomez-Preston began her acting career in The WB'Hood as Zaria Peterson at 14 years old. Bernadette, Flex's younger sister/Brianna's aunt, appeared on UPN's One on One as Flex's younger sister/Brianna's aunt. In addition, she appeared as a guest host of the weekly music show Soul Train, which premiered in December 1995. She appeared in Love Inc., a short-lived UPN sitcom, and she is also a former cast member of Nickelodeon's The Amanda Show. She has appeared in King magazine twice, first in the September/October 2003 issue and again in the December 2006/January 2007 issue. In her second appearance, she was one of five cover girls.
