Senior professor at Royal College of Music quits over health issues after complaints of gross misconduct upheld

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 13, 2024
Mark Messenger, 59, an acclaimed violinist and conductor, resigned as Head of Strings at the Royal College of Music (RCM) during his disciplinary hearing. He had been suspended since last year following allegations about his behaviour. The college has refused to give details about the complaints. Last night Mr Messenger said: 'I decided to resign due to health issues that were a direct consequence of how the RCM had pursued this case against me. 'I had no confidence in a process that did not afford me my basic rights of being able to defend myself, nor in the outcome of a meeting that was not in possession of all the facts. 'Any implication that I resigned because of the outcome of the disciplinary process or that the college terminated my employment is entirely erroneous.'

Rachmaninov's Piano Concerto No. 11 is a classic triumph. 2 has been named as the United Kingdom's most popular piece of classical music

In the annual Classic FM Hall Of Fame survey, the Russian composer's piece came out on top. In 2023, it dethroned English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams' The Lark Ascending. In 1901, Rachmaninov wrote his masterpiece concerto, thanking his doctor Nikolai Dahl, who helped him overcome a depressive episode. Following Eric Carmen's death last month, the piece received renewed notice, after he sampled a portion of Rachmaninov's melody in his hit song All By Myself.

Kate Garraway says farewell to her husband Derek Draper at funeral held in the same Primrose Hill church where they married nearly 20 years ago

www.dailymail.co.uk, February 2, 2024
Kate Garraway said a final farewell to her late husband Derek Draper at his funeral today, which took place at the same church where they married nearly two decades ago. Garraway and Draper married in Primrose Hill, an Anglican church in the exclusive London suburb of Beggart on September 10, 2005. Their marriage was carried out by Bishop Robert Atwell, the Right Reverend Robert Atwell, who died last September but was welcomed to the funeral today as a visitor. Fiona Phillips, Ben Shephard, and Richard Arnold were among those who attended the wedding 19 years ago and were also present today at the event. St Mary's, as it is locally known, is a place for surviving Victorian boys founded by two Hampstead businessmen in 1865, which held services in a nearby iron building that became so popular that the new brick church was built. The church was built in July 1872 and is best known for being where vicar Percy Dearmer and composer Ralph Vaughan Williams compiled 'The English Hymnal' in 1906.
