Early life
Thakrar grew up in Leicester, England, and is of Indian descent. She attended Soar Valley College. Thakrar joined Hathi Productions, a Leicester-based theatre company, as a youth.
Career
In 2004, Thakrar landed Roopa Chauhan's role in the radio drama Silver Street, which was broadcast on the BBC Asian Network. Thakrar appeared from the first episode in 2004, to the last episode in 2010. Thakrar made her first television appearance in the BBC drama Banglatown Banquet in 2006. Thakrar went on to star in a number of television series, including Doctors, Holby City, Peep Show, and, in particular, played a lead role in the British-Asian drama Cloud 9.
Thakrar appeared in EastEnders in 2013 and made her first on-screen appearance on January 13, 2014. Shabnam Masood's character had appeared before by Zahra Ahmadi from 2007 to 2008. When portraying Shabnam, Thakrar's most popular storyline was when the character gave birth to a young boy, with viewers, researchers, and co-workers applauding her performance throughout the storyline. Thakrar has since been a spokeswoman for Sands, a stillbirth charity. Thakrar left EastEnders in 2015 and was last seen on film on February 5th, 2016, following Shabnam's failed marriage to Kush Kazemi (Davood Ghadami). Thakrar was one of 20 young people recruited to the Leicester Mercury's Pathfinder program in 2004. A group of young journalists was able to devote ten months to print journalism and reporting on their communities, thanks in collaboration with Leicester City Council. During this period, Thakrar wrote articles on topics such as the impact of Bollywood on Leicester, as well as the unusual circumstance of being born on February 29.
