Quinn Shephard's Viral Hit 'Not Okay' prompted internet scammers and Doomscrolling

www.mtv.com, August 2, 2022
Quinn Shephard, the writer and director of Zoom wearing a sparkly gold necklace, is upbeat and forthcoming when addressing her new film Not Okay, even as it deals with our society's harsher truths. The film, which follows one woman's misguided journey to become the internet's next trending celebrity, is a satirical cautionary tale that illustrates how skewed social media personas influence the reality in which we live. The protagonists, Zoey Deutch (Danni Sanders), Dylan O'Brien (Colin), and Mia Issac (Rowan), who are linked by their collective use of the internet to cope with trauma, are linked. It was this bizarre juxtaposition between scrolling troubling headlines, influencer scandals, and shiny beauty advertorials that sparked Shephard's proposal for the project. "I was like, 'When they finally pass laws and ban school shootings, stop all of it,'" she says. “It keeps getting more relevant, which is tragic.”
