Early life
Pom Klementieff was born in Quebec City, Canada, to a Korean mother and Russian-French father Alexis Klementieff, who was serving as a consul for France's government. She is a French citizen but does not have citizenship because jus soli does not refer to diplomats' children. Eugene Klementieff, a Russian painter, was her grandfather. Because it is similar in pronunciation to Korean words for both "spring" () and "tiger"), her parents selected "Pom" (). Klementieff lived in Canada for a year before her family began traveling extensively due to her father's work. They lived in Japan and the Ivory Coast before settling in France.
Klementieff's father died of cancer when she was five years old, and her mother had schizophrenia and was unable to care for children, so Klementieff was raised by her paternal uncle and aunt. On her 18th birthday, her uncle, who she described as "like [her] second father," died on her 18th birthday, and her older brother Namou died by suicide on her 25th birthday. Klementieff attended law school after her uncle's death to appease her aunt, but she did not find the career path appealing. She also worked in France as a waitress and saleswoman. Career
Klementieff's first professional acting work was on the French independent film Après lui (2007), starring the stepdaughter of the protagonist played by Catherine Deneuve. She made some of her own clothes fit into the character's wardrobe, and she trained three hours a day for two months for an on-screen battle with actor Josh Brolin. After Lee ordered her to look into potential names for the character, Klementieff came up with the word Haeng-bok, Korean for "happiness."
After Oldboy was shot on film and began seeking more Hollywood auditions, Klementieff moved to Los Angeles. She started taekwondo after the film and has a purple belt as of the summer of 2014. Klementieff reprised her boxing abilities in the film, but she had to do her own make-up and choose her own costume due to the film's low budget.
