Pinklon Thomas Career

Professional career

After just three amateur matches, Thomas became a pro. He will take his first world championship shot against current WBC heavyweight champion Tim Witherspoon in Las Vegas, Nevada, in 1984.

Thomas won the WBC Heavyweight Championship in a tough 12-round match over "Terrible" Tim Witherspoon on August 31, 1984. He defended his position against ex-champion Mike Weaver, stopping Weaver with a single punch in the eighth round ten months later. Thomas lost the WBC championship to Trevor Berbick in March 1986 by a decision.

Thomas came back and reeled off three ko wins before preparing for a match against WBC and WBA Heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in May 1987. Despite the fact that Thomas had to recover from a serious shoulder injury, he had a blast out of Talton. In the 6th round, where Tyson knocked Thomas out with a devastating fifteen punch salvo, Thomas was back to square one for the first and final time in his lengthy career. Although he made it to the count, the contest was called off.

Thomas went in and out of retirement over the years, battling top candidates.

In December 1988, he returned from a 19-month layoff to face Evander Holyfield, the nation's top heavyweight champion. Thomas was rusty as he was defeated over 7 rounds, including a pull out of his corner. Thomas' longtime trainer Angelo Dundee advised him to resign and stop working with him.

Thomas returned to outpoint Curtis Isaac over ten rounds before being outpointed by the erratic and unpredictable Mike "The Bounty" Hunter. Riddick Bowe was defeated in 8 rounds a few months later and he was forced to leave after eight rounds. Bowe will face Holyfield and become the undisputed world heavyweight champion.

He took on hard-hitting heavyweight Tommy Morrison in February 1991, but he was disqualified and stunned in the first round and pulled out on his stool. Morrison went on to win the WBO championship.

Thomas attempted one last comeback in 1992, winning twelve fights before outpointing Craig Payne. In his last fight in January 1993, journeyman "Poncho" Carter shocked him.

Tim Witherspoon's comeback battle in 1999 was not to be, because the winner of a match with Larry Holmes could not be announced.
