Pierre Cardin Career

Career

Cardin was born near Treviso, northern Italy, the son of Maria Montagner and Alessandro Cardin. His parents, who were wealthy wine merchants, but lost their fortune in World War I. To escape the blackshirts, they left Italy and settled in Saint-Étienne, France, in 1924, with his ten siblings. His father wanted him to study architecture, but he was always interested in dressmaking.

In 1945, Cardin moved to Paris. He studied architecture and worked with Paquin's fashion house after World War II. He worked with Elsa Schiaparelli until he became the head of Christian Dior's tailleure atelier in 1947, but was refused to work at Balenciaga.

In 1950, Cardin founded his own fashion house. His career began when he designed around 30 of the costumes for a masquerade ball in Venice, which was hosted by Carlos de Beistegui in 1951. Cardin began his haute couture work in 1953 with his first line of women's clothing and joined the Chambre Syndicale, a French group of haute couture designers. He opened his first boutique Eve and launched the "bubble dress," a short-skirted, bubble-shaped dress made by bias-cutting over a stiffened base. When he travelled to Japan in 1957, he was the first couturier to convert to a high fashion trend.

Ready-to-wear ('prêt-à-porter') soared, as haute couture's styles began to fade, as well as Cardin's designs. He was the first to blend the "mini" and the "maxi" skirts of the 1970s by introducing a new hemline with long pom-pom panels or fringes.

Cardin introduced "mod chic" as a new fashion in the 1970s. This is true in any case or for a combination of forms that did not exist at the time. He was the first to mix short and ankle length pieces. He made dresses with slits and batwing sleeves with novel lengths, as well as mixed circular motion and gypsy skirts with structured tops. These creations allowed for the geometric shapes that captured him to be compared, both circular and straight lines. Cardin became a pioneer of the popular fashion movement of the 1970s.

Cardin visited NASA (the National Aeronautics and Space Administration) in 1970, where he tried on the first human to step on the moon, Neil Armstrong, who was inspired by space travel and exploration. In 1970, Cardin developed spacesuits for NASA.

In 1966, Cardin resigned from the Chambre Syndicale and began exhibiting his collections in his own building. He also designed uniforms for Pakistani Airlines, which were from 1966 to 1971 and became a instant hit.

Cardin redesigned the Barong Tagalog, the Philippines' national costume, by opening the front, removing the cufflinks that needed cufflinks, flaring the arms, and minimizing the embroidery. In comparison to the conventional loose fitting style, it was also tapered to the body, and it had a thicker collar with sharp and pointed cuffs. President Ferdinand Marcos favoured a straight-cut style.

Cardin opened his first furniture store in 1975 on the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré. He received the Cartier Golden Thimble by French haute couture in 1977, 1979, and 1983 for the season's most unique collection. He served as a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture et du Prêt-à-Porter from 1953 to 1993.

Cardin, like many other designers, decided in 1994 that his collection would be limited to a small group of carefully selected customers and journalists. He unveiled a new collection to a group of 150 journalists at his bubble home in Cannes after a break of 15 years.

Sylvana Lorenz wrote a book titled Pierre Cardin, his stunning destiny.

P. David Ebersole and Todd Hughes' film "Cardin" directed by Cardin, premiered at the 76th Venice International Film Festival on September 6, 2019, with Mr. Cardin in attendance.
