Philippe Kahn Life

Philippe Kahn (born March 16, 1952) is a mathematician, computer programmer, entrepreneur, and founder of four technology firms: Fullpower Technologies, LightSurf Technologies, Starfish Software, and Borland.

Kahn is credited with the first camera phone, being a pioneer in wearable technology intellectual property, and the author of scores of technology patents including Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI) modeling, wearable, eyewear, smartphones, and medical devices.

Early life and education

Philippe Kahn is the son of Charles-Henri Kahn (1915-1999) and Claire Monis (1922-1967).

Kahn was born and raised in Paris, France. He was born to Jewish immigrants of modest means.

His mother was a French singer, actress, and violinist who had been raised in Paris by parents who had left the Russian pogroms. She was 21 years old when she was sent to the Auschwitz extermination camp in 1942 for being Lieutenant in the French Resistance. Alma Rosé conducted her as a member of the Auschwitz Women's Orchestra. Philippe Kahn was solely raised by his mother after his parents separated in 1957. He was only 15 years old when his mother died in Paris after a car crash.

Kahn obtained a full scholarship and University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, France, after being educated in mathematics at the ETH Zurich, Switzerland (Swiss Federal Polytechnic Institute). He obtained his master's degree in mathematics. He received a master's degree in musicology composition and classical flute performance at the Zurich Music Conservatory in Switzerland. As a student, Kahn wrote software for the MICRAL, which is listed as the first ever microprocessor-based personal computer at the Computer History Museum.

Personal life

Kahn has four children, three of whom are from his first marriage. He later married Sonia Lee, with whom he has a daughter, Sophie. Sonia co-founded three of Kahn's firms with him: Fullpower Technologies, LightSurf, and Starfish Software.

Philippe Kahn's obsession with the climate and the outdoors led him to the sport of sailing. He started late, but after a few years of going hard, he won more races than most people can handle in a lifetime. "I must learn how to sail before I die," Trump said. "I tell people, if you love sailing, you'll love Santa Cruz," the sailing legend told him.

Pegasus Racing, Kahn's sailing team, competes in many world championships each year. Kahn, an offshore sailor with over ten trans-Pacific crossings, holds the Transpac double handed (two-crewmember) record from San Francisco to Oahu, Hawaii.

His sailing accomplishments include winning the 2009 Transpacific Yacht Race from Los Angeles to Hawaii and setting the Transpacific Yacht Race's record of 7 days, 19 hours, beating the previous time of ten days, 4 hours.

Samuel ("Shark") Kahn's son took up sailing as a child. He had several notable races in his youth, including the 2003 Melges 24 Worlds race right after he turned 15. He has competed against his father.

Philippe Kahn Career

Career

Kahn has founded four software firms: Borland, founded in 1982 (acquired by Micro Focus in 2009), Starfish Software, founded in 1994 (acquired by Motorola in 1998), and Full Power Technologies, founded in 2005.

Kahn founded Borland in 1982 and served as its CEO until 1995. At the time, it was a competitor of Microsoft's and that it manufactured programming language compilers and software development tools. Turbo Pascal, the company's first product, went for $49.95 at a time when programming programs cost hundreds or thousands of dollars. Kahn, the founder, CEO and Chairman of Borland, and without venture capital, Borland was unable to recover from zero income to a US$500 million run-rate. Both Kahn and the Borland board had a disagreement on how to organize the company. Kahn was compelled by the board to resign from his position as CEO in January 1995 and he created Starfish Software.

Starfish Software was established in 1995 by Philippe Kahn as a spin-off from the Simplify business unit of Borland and Kahn's separation from Borland and Kahn. TrueSync was the first Over-The-Air (OTA) synchronization device. In 1998, Motorola purchased Starfish for US$325 million.

In 1998, Kahn and his wife Sonia co-founded multimedia communications firm LightSurf Technologies. Picture-Mail and the camera phone were commercialized by LightSurf.

LightSurf was acquired by Verisign in 2005 for US$300 million. In 2009, Syniverse Technologies purchased Lightsurf from Verisign.

Fullpower, which was established in 2005, provides a fully licensed ecosystem for wearable and Internet of Things sensor-fusion services that extends sensor networks. Sensors and artificial intelligence are used to assist with sleep monitoring technologies at the company.

Kahn's passion for sailing inspired some of Fullpower's electronics. Kahn began testing with biosensors and three-axis linear accelerometers that could detect micromovements and provide concrete recommendations during a gruesome competition that requires sailors to sleep less than an hour per 24-hour period. To maximize sleep quality and sail time, Kahn invented prototype sleep trackers that were built using biosensors that were optimized for 26-minute power naps.

Kahn introduced the first camera phone system in 1997, which allowed images to be shared on public networks. The birth of Kahn's daughter sparked this invention. Kahn had been working on a web server-based image server, so he dubbed Picture Mail. Kahn jury-rigged a link between a smartphone and a digital camera at the hospital while his wife was in labor and posted photos in real time to the picture messaging network he had used in his house. "I had always wanted to have this all working in time to publish my daughter's birth picture, but I wasn't positive I'd make it." It's also true that if it weren't for the last minute, nothing would get done."

Time Magazine included Kahn's first camera phone photo in their list of the 100 most influential images of all time in 2016. Subconscious Films produced a short film in 2017 commemorating Philippe's release of his daughter Sophie's first camera-phone snapshot.

Kahn has applied for or received over 230 patents around the world, including artificial intelligence-modeling applications, Internet of Things, motion detection, wearable electronics, telecoms, and sleep monitoring.
