He was both chairman and Chief Executive of Amber Day, a discount store, in 1988. The shares recovered well, but the company suffered through a string of downgrades, and in 1992, he resigned after the company fell short of its profit forecast.

Green later assisted Tina Green in the purchase of the Arcadia Group, which owns High Street stores such as Burton, Dorothy Perkins, Evans, Miss Selfridge, Outfit, Topshop/Topman, and Wallis in 2002. Green briefly owned the business but it was sold to Tina Green within 24 hours, with Philip acting as CEO. After high street sales were adversely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, Arcadia Group went into administration on November 30, 2020.
