Philip Akin (born April 18, 1950) is a Canadian actor who has appeared in major American films, including The Sum of All Fears, S.W.A.T., and Get Rich or Die Tryin'.

He has also done a lot of voice work, including voicing Bishop For the X-Men animated film and Tripp Hansen in Monster Force.

Life and career

Akin was born in Kingston, Jamaica, as a middle brother of five boys. In 1953, his parents immigrated to Oshawa, Ontario, and he and his brothers followed suit the next year. He has been living in Ontario ever since. Akin attended Ryerson Theatre School in Toronto, just shy of starting high school. He was the school's first acting graduate in 1975 and Cleopatra's play The school's first acting graduate, he took the lead just a few days later in a Shaw Festival production of Caesar and Cleopatra.

Akin began studying Yoshinkan aikido in 1983 and is now a 5th degree black belt in the discipline. He has also worked in Jing ming fu and t'ai chi ch'uan.

Akin first rose to fame in the early 1980s when he appeared on the zany comedy show Bizarre. Kid Cornelius, a boxer, appeared in the "Shadow Boxer" episode of Friday the 13th (1987) and his continuing role as the wheelchair-bound computer expert Norton Drake in the first season of War of the Worlds, a Canadian/American television series (1988–90). Charlie DeSalvo in Highlander has also earned him a lot of attention. Kofi Annan, then UN Under-Secretary General for Peacekeeping Operations, is depicted in Shake Hands with the Devil. In 2007, Akin performed at the Stratford Festival of Canada, a prestigious summer-long celebration of theatre held in Stratford, Ontario, Canada. In William Shakespeare's Othello's title role, he appeared in the role of Crooks, as well as in the Festival's interpretation of John Steinbeck's "Mates and Men" from Mice and Men. For example, Philip Akin appears in a long line of guest appearances on television shows, including F/X: The Series, Mutant X, Flashpoint (2008), and most recently, The Expanse (2015).

Akin is a founding member and served as the artistic director of the Obsidian Theatre Company, a Canadian theatre company dedicated to the study of blacks, from 2006-2020. In 2012, he was named recipient of the Dora Mavor Moore Award for Outstanding Direction of a Play/Musical for his role in Suzan-Lori Parks' Topdog/Underdog, which starred Kevin Hanchard and Nigel Shawn Williams. He also supported mentoring services aimed at Black theatre directors, who were instrumental in his position.

The Globe and Mail named Akin one of the Canadian artists of 2019 in the final year of his tenure as artistic director of Obsidian. The theatre founded The Black Shoulders Award in Aikin's honor, which is given to Black artists to pursue their craft following their departure from Obsidian.

Alice Childress, Akin, was the producer for the Shaw Festival's 2020 performance of Trouble in Mind.
