Career
In 1996, Kivilaakso gained third place in the second International Paulo Cello Competition at the age of 18. He earned a lifetime membership in the Helsinki Philharmonic orchestra, where his father, Juhani, is also a cellist. When touring with Apocalyptica, he was on indefinite leave, but it wasn't in 2007.
Kivilaakso has written music for Max Payne's Fallout, a few documentary films, as well as many original compositions for Apocalyptica, including "Conclusion," "Farewell" and "Beautiful."
On January 22, 2016, his first opera, performed with his Apocalyptica bandmate Eicca Toppinen, was premiered at the Finnish National Opera. "A tale of an omnipotent, multinational corporation, and a quest for happiness are two operatic operas titled Indigo."
