Nate Walcott Career

Life and career

Walcott was born in Albany, New York, on March 6, 1978. His family immigrated to East Homer, a Central New York village, as he was a boy. When Walcott was eight, his family moved to Lincoln, Nebraska.

Walcott, a Lincoln-based high school student, appeared in many Lincoln-based bands, including Kid Quarkstar and future Maroon 5 guitarist James Valentine. Mike Mogis, A.J., had also met musicians Mike Mogis. Mogis and Ted Stevens of Lincoln-based band Lullaby for the Working Class, with whom he performed and toured, are among the members.

Walcott went on to DePaul University in Chicago after graduating from high school in 1996. He took time off from his studies to tour with The Glenn Miller Orchestra and Lullaby for the Working Class.

Walcott spent time after university working with a large number of musicians, including the Chicago-based Las Guitarras de Espana, the Mighty Blue Kings, and Pinetop Seven. He was also active in the experimental and "experimental" music scene, appearing with David Boykin, Mike Reed, and Keefe Jackson at Viol's Velvet Lounge, the Hungry Brain, and the Green Mill, as well as his own group, the Nate Walcott Octet. Walcott remained connected to Nebraska throughout college and later, working as an arranger and performer on records being made by Mike Mogis for artists including The Faint, Rilo Kiley, and Johnathan Rice.

Walcott met Conor Oberst of the bands Bright Eyes, Commander Venus, and Desaparecidos while still a student and working with musicians in Lincoln and Omaha's burgeoning music scene. Walcott joined Bright Eyes on its tour in support of 2002's album Lifted or The Story is told in the Soil, Keep Your Ear to the Ground, and also on most subsequent tours following the "Lifted" tour. Walcott appeared on 2005's studio recordings I'm Wide Awake, It's Morning, and Digital Ash in a Digital Urn and the live album Motion Sickness.

Walcott, along with Mike Mogis, were selected as a permanent member of the group in 2006, in preparation for writing and recording Bright Eyes' next album. Cassadaga was first introduced on April 10, 2007. Walcott co-wrote "Coat Check Dream Song." Walcott arranged the band's appearance at the Hollywood Bowl with the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra following a five-month tour of the United States.

Walcott completed his Cassadaga tour by collaborating with Oberst (along with Nik Freitas, Taylor Hollingsworth, Macey Taylor, and Jason Boesel) on his solo projects, 2008's Conor Oberst, and 2009's Outer South. The group came to be known as the Mystic Valley Band in Tepoztlán, Mexico, as a nod to the 2008 film, a villa named Valle Mistico.

Walcott appeared on Broken Bells as a music producer and multi-instrumentalist, an exciting partnership between James Mercer and Danger Mouse. He and Oberst and Mogis returned to the studio later this year to record the forthcoming Bright Eyes album. On February 15, 2011, the People's Key was introduced. Walcott co-wrote the song "Approximate Sunlight." Several tours of North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Australia have been published, as well as appearances at London's Royal Albert Hall.

Walcott has produced a number of films and arranging assignments in recent years, including with She & Him, U2, Beck, Jenny Lewis, The Shins, Rilo Kiley, and Maroon 5. In addition, he has kept a full playing schedule with M. Ward, Eleni Mandell, Jonathan Wilson, Harper Simon, and Zavalaz, a new band led by Cedric Bixler-Zavala of The Mars Volta. Walcott has continued to appear at Conor Oberst occasionally, most notably during his recent solo appearances at Carnegie Hall in November 2013.

Walcott is on tour with the Red Hot Chili Peppers on their The Getaway World Tour, playing piano, keyboards, and trumpet. He is featured on the Live In Paris EP for 2016.

Walcott has lived in Chicago, Omaha, Brooklyn, and Los Angeles, where he now lives.
