Personal life
Waaktaar-Savoy was born on the 6th of September 1961 in Tonsenhagen, Norway, on the outskirts of Oslo, and with his older sister Tongje, he was raised in Oslo's Manglerud district. His birth name is P.l Gamst; in Norwegian terms, a common alternate spelling of his first name is Paal; His father was a pharmacist, and his mother worked at the phone company. He is a distant cousin of Norwegian footballer Morten Gamst Pedersen.
His parents loved classical music and encouraged young Pl first to play the flute and then study music composition when his performance skills revealed him to be a child prodigy. Jimi Hendrix, an American rock guitarist, adored the music of his time as a child and aspired to write a rock opera similar to Hair on one day. Pl Waaktar became his mother's maiden name in his stage name, Waaktaar. He also enjoyed reading and drawing. He was a loner, not social at school, and he had trouble finding girlfriends in his teens.
Lauren Savoy, an American filmmaker and singer, married in 1991, with his family and his comrades in attendance, as part of Norwegian Bar Association leader Merete Smith's visit. Waaktaar-Savoy was created by a couple who combined surnames. True August Waaktaar-Savoy was born in 1999 and they have one child together, True August Waaktaar-Savoy. The family splits its time between New York City and Oslo. In 1994, he settled on the spelling of his first name after years of struggling with the Anglophone media to reform the spelling of his first name.
Music career
Pl Waaktaar, as he was then known, was lead singer, guitarist, and songwriter in the Norwegian rock band Bridges, as well as keyboardist Magne Furuholmen (with whom he later formed A-ha with drummer Morten Harket), drummer Erik Hagelien and ystein Jevanord, and bassist Viggo Bondi. Bridges Records' sole album, the self-financed LP Fakkeltog, was released in 1980. Despite the fact that the title refers to a torchlight parade, the songs are in English. A-ha performed the Fakkeltog song "The Vacant" (renamed "Sox of the Fox) during their 2017 MTV Unplugged appearance as MTV Unplugged – Summer Solstice, at Harket's request.
"The Juicy Fruit Song," an unreleased Bridges song, evolved into "Lesson One" and then "Take On Me" in the A-haul style.
Waaktaar-Savoy is the lead guitarist and main songwriter for A-ha, one of the 1980s' most popular bands. "Q Magazine" ranked him as one of the best unknown lyricists of his generation. Following a break, A-ha performed "Summer Moved On" live at the Nobel Prize-Prize-Concert. They decided to record a new album and, in 2000, A-ha had the year's comeback, followed by a sold-out tour. In 2002, the A-ha album "Lifelines" was released. The following tour was chronicled in A-ha's second official live album, How Can I Sleep with Your Voice in My Head, which was released in March 2003.
The Singles: 1984-2004, a compilation album by WEA, was released in 2005. A-ha has signed to Universal since then. Later this year, Analogue was released. At No. 6, the title-track entered the UK charts at No. 2. 10. Foot of the Mountains, the band's ninth studio album, was released in 2009. The band separated after that, but Cast in Steel, a new studio album, was released in 2015.
"Morten is completely different from me," Waaktaar-Savoy said. He burned all my clothes and re-dressed me from head to toe when we first arrived in London together. I don't care much about clothes, but he's always interested in them. He has given me self-confidence and encourages me to talk to people, not to be afraid or to use the skills I have. Morten is actually the only one in Norway with the same aspirations as I did. We all have egos, according to me. We're all sitting in our own little world, while Mags is more down to earth. Mags often has to mediate between Morten and me... It's good that we're so different and yet we all love each other. The tension between us is also creative. Morten is the best-known song in the world. He's got what it takes, and I have a lot of confidence in him."
The three members of a-ha, Morten Harket, Magne Furuholmen, and Waaktaar-Savoy were all named Knights of the Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav for their contributions to Norwegian music. The Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav is a award for distinguished services to their country and humanity. On the 6th of November, 2012, the official ceremony took place.
He has made several CDs with his wife as the band Savoy. Waaktaar's fourth studio album, "Reasons to Stay Indoors," was a huge success in Norway in 2001. Savoy released their fifth studio album, 'Savoy,' on August 30, 2004, under their own brand, Eleventeen Records.
He has performed in the band Savoy with his wife and drummer Frode Unneland. Savoy have had a fruitful run in Norway, selling over 300,000 units. They have been nominated for Spellemannprisen (the Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy Award) four times before, and they have won three times. In the highly acclaimed Norwegian film Hawaii, Oslo, A-ha's interpretation of the song "Velvet" appears in the film One Night at McCool's and "Whalebone."
In June 2011, Jimmy Gnecco unveiled Weathervane as a new venture. Headhunters' soundtrack (based on Jo Nesb's book "Hodejegerne") appears on their self-titled single (Weathervane).
Waaktaar-Savoy premiered a new track under the name Waaktaar on a-haar.com in February 2014. "Manmade Lake" is the track.
Waaktaar and Zoe formed a new pair with singer Zoe Gnecco (daughter of Weathervane singer Jimmy Gnecco), called Waaktaar and Zoe in September 2016. "Beautiful Burnout" (2016) and "Tearful Girl" (2018) were two singles released, both taken from the album "World of Trouble," which was released in February 2017.
