Albert Paul Shenar (February 12, 1936 - October 11, 1989) was an American actor and theatre director best known for portraying Bolivian drug lord Alejandro Sosa in Scarface (1983). He was one of the founding members of the American Conservatory Theatre as a veteran Broadway and Shakespearean actor.
Early life
Shenar was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the second of four boys (one older brother John, two younger brothers Michael and Marc) and Eugene Joseph Shenar, born in Mary Rosella (née Puhek) and Eugene Joseph Shenar. He was of Polish and Slovenian descent.
Personal life
Shenar was gay and was romantically involved with British actor Jeremy Brett in the 1970s; they were in a relationship that allegedly lasted from 1973 to 1978. The couple were close friends until Shenar's death in 1989.
Career
Shenar came to theater at an early age, working in Milwaukee playhouse productions. He enlisted in the United States Air Force after graduating from high school. He began acting again after his service career. Shenar gained traction in 1970s television films as a giant entertainment celebrity—Orson Welles in The Night That Panicked America and Florenz Ziegfeld, Jr. in Ziegfeld: The Man and His Woman. In Part II of the miniseries Roots, John Carrington portrayed him.
Shenar also appeared Alejandro Sosa in Brian De Palma's Scarface in 1983 and later portrayed Paulo Rocca in Raw Deal.
In Tiny Alice, he was a founding member, actor, producer, and mentor of the American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) in San Francisco. He appeared in more than forty films, including Hamlet, Oedipus Rex, and Brother Julian. In 1982, He played Jenner in Don Bluth's The Secret of NIMH; his appearance in the film moved Bluth so much that he wanted Shenar to also portray Borf in Space Ace, but he was unable to do so due to budget constraints and the character eventually went to Bluth.
Shenar began to perform in the late 1980s. In Los Angeles, he produced a stage version of Macbeth (1987), The Bedroom Window (1988), The Big Blue (1989), as well as the TV film Rage of Angels: The Story Continues.
