Patrick Roberts Career

Club career

Roberts, who joined Fulham at the age of 13, signed his first professional deal shortly after his 17th birthday in February 2014, tying him to the club until the summer of 2016. "One of the best feelings I've ever had in my life," Roberts described signing the deal as "one of the best feelings I've ever had in my life."

Roberts was named as one of Fulham's replacements for the first time on March 15th, 2014, against Newcastle United, with Fulham manager Felix Magath referring to him as "an extraordinary talent" after the match. In a Premier League loss to Manchester City on March 22, 2014, he made his debut as a 55th-minute substitute. He scored in the second leg of the 2014 FA Youth Cup final, where Fulham lost 7–6 on aggregate to Chelsea on aggregate. Roberts made his debut of the 2014–2015 campaign as a replacement in Fulham's opening day fixture against Ipswich Town, where he managed to grab an assist right away. In a home match against Wolverhampton Wanderers on August 20, he made his first appearance for the Cottagers on August 20, 2014.

Roberts signed for Manchester City on a long-term contract for an undisclosed fee that is estimated to be in the region of £12 million. Roberts made his debut against Jes Navas at Real Madrid in the pre-season 2015 International Champions Cup. Roberts made his first appearance for Manchester City as a replacement during a 4–1 win over Sunderland in the League Cup on September 22nd. He made his Manchester City debut in a 4–1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur, coming on as a substitute for Sergio Agüero.

Celtic had agreed an 18-month loan agreement with Manchester City for Roberts, according to the player, who was in Glasgow for a medical. On February 1, the transfer was announced. He played for the U20 side a few days after winning by 4–0 over Motherwell, scoring Celtic's fourth goal and providing support for the other three goals. On Friday, Roberts made his Celtic debut, serving as a replacement for Celtic's 3–0 league victory over Inverness CT. He made his first appearance in a league match against Dundee on March 2nd. Celtic could only draw 0–0, but Roberts was said to have been "sharp" and had "flashes of his ability" and showed "flashes of his talent."

In a 3–1 victory over Hearts on April 2, Roberts scored his first competitive club goal, netting a brace for Celtic. Roberts was named Scottish Player of the Month for April after an impressive run of form in which he scored three goals. In a 3–2 victory over Aberdeen on May 8, he had another brace, helping Celtic clinch the Scottish Premiership crown. Roberts scored another goal in a 7–0 loss to Motherwell, putting the season's record of 7 goals in 12 appearances ends.

Roberts made his first Champions League appearance on July 20th, leading and scoring in a 3-0 win over Lincoln Red Imps. He had previously declined to represent England at the U19 European Championship in order to help Celtic progress to the Champions League Championships. Roberts scored an impressive solo goal and was named man of the match in a Champions League match against his parent club Manchester City on December 6th. He finished the 2016-2017 season with 43 appearances and 15 goals, assisting Celtic to win their first domestic season, in which the club earned its sixth straight league championship.

Roberts had returned to Celtic on a new season-long loan, as it was announced on August 28. Roberts sustained a hamstring injury in November during a match against Motherwell and was sidelined for a number of months. On March 18, 2018, he returned to the same opposition as a replacement for James Forrest in a 0–0 draw.

Roberts spent time in Girona, Manchester City's Spanish partner team, during the 2018-19 season, with Manchester City claiming that the next stage in Robert's growth would be testing himself in La Liga, one of the world's most competitive leagues. He was the only English player playing in the Spanish top flight at the time of his signing, and he made his debut against Real Valladolid the following day. He had a difficult season, but the club lost relegation to the Segunda División after losing him in 19 league appearances.

Roberts was the first new addition to the most recent Championship winners and, as a result, newly promoted Premier League club Norwich City, where they were signed on a season-long loan.

Roberts joined Middlesbrough on loan until the 2019-20 season begins on January 2nd, 2020. In a 2–1 victory over Reading on July 14, 2020, he scored his first goal for Middlesbrough. It was announced on October 12, 2020, that he would be loaned to the club for the remainder of the 2020-2021 season.

Roberts remained on loan with Derby County for the remainder of the 2020–21 season from February 2021. In a 0–3 away league loss to Rotherham United two days later, he made his Rams debut as a replacement for Kamil Jówiak.

He joined French club Troyes on loan on August 31, 2021.

Roberts joined Sunderland on January 21, 2022, on his first short-term six-month contract, with the club having the ability to prolong his contract. In a 2–0 win over Crewe Alexandra on March 12, 2022, he scored his first goal for Sunderland. Sunderland defeated Sheffield Wednesday in the 2nd leg of the League 1 play off semi-finals at Wembley Stadium on May 2022. After winning promotion through the play-offs, Roberts signed a new two-year deal with the club on June 25th.

International career

Roberts has represented England at under-16, under-17, and under-19 levels. He was instrumental in England's win at the 2014 European Under-17 Championship in Malta, scoring three goals, grabbing four assists, and being named in the tournament's squad.

Roberts was called up to the England under-19 squad for the first time in August 2014. Despite being only 17 years old at the time, Roberts was instrumental in the England under-19 team's success in the 2015 UEFA European Under-19 Championship qualifying round. Roberts scored a total of four goals and four assists in three group games played by England under the age of 19. He had previously declined to be in the England squad at the U19 European Championship in order to assist Celtic in their transition to the Champions League. Roberts was originally supposed to be picked for the England under-20 team in the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup, but he instead chose Celtic in the 2017 Scottish Cup Final.

Before the teen agreed to sign for Sunderland for £1.5 million, Newcastle spoke to Jobe Bellingham's family, but the Magpies are one of a number of Premier League clubs still keeping tabs on the brother of Real Madrid superstar Jude

XclusIVE BY CRAIG HOPE: Newcastle contacted Jobe Bellingham's family in the hopes of signing the child before he moved to Sunderland in June. After watching his growth at Birmingham City and England youth teams, the Magpies were keen on adding the attacking midfielder to their underage ranks. Bellingham, however, and those close to him wanted a move that guaranteed first-team participation, and the Black Cats have played 26 times since being drafted.

Sunderland will not die in the search of promotion

ADAM SHERGOLD: Sunderland won't make it to the Premier League, but they will not die wondering about promotion. That stems from Tony Mowbray's youthful squad's inexperience and Patrick Roberts' swagger, as Sunderland defeated Luton 2-1 to advance to Kenilworth Road for tomorrow's second leg. A defensive injury crisis simply became an opportunity to put more attacking players on the pitch for Mowbray as a stunner from Manchester United loanee Diallo and a Trai Hume header turned the game after Elijah Adebayo's early opener for Luton
