Beverley was ineligible to play in the 2008–09 season due to academic hardships in August 2008. Beverley admitted that he had been suspended due to an academic reputation issue on a class paper, debating allegations that inadequate grades were to blame. Beverley decided to honed his NBA experience rather than waiting out his suspension. "Someone did a paper for me," despite initially rejecting it. I turned in a paper that wasn't mine. It was given full punishment. That's over.

I served my punishment"

Professional career

Beverley had a child and signed a one-year deal with Ukrainian company Dnipro in October 2008; there was no buyout; and Beverley was free to leave without penalty at the end of season. He was a participant in the Ukrainian Basketball League (UBL) All-Star Game and championed the league's Slam Dunk Competition. Beverley played 16.7 points, 7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 2.2 steals, and 1.3 blocks in 46 games for Dnipro.

Beverley was automatically drafted into the 2009 NBA draft, where he was drafted with the Los Angeles Lakers' 42nd overall pick. The Miami Heat acquired the draft rights to Beverley from the Lakers in exchange for a 2011 second-round draft pick and cash considerations, the day after the draft was revealed. He was then cut as part of the final roster cuts.

Beverley joined the Greek team Olympiacos Piraeus on August 26, 2009. He was a member of Olympiacos who won the 2010 Greek Cup title and advanced to the finals of both the EuroLeague and the Greek League. He averaged 2.7 points and 1.9 rebounds in 19 EuroLeague games. Beverley revealed on July 19, 2012 that he would not be returning to Spartak for the 2012–13 season, but Spartak insisted that he honor his deal—he could only void his commitment if he were to lose his salary if he were to receive an NBA invite. Patrick Beverley refused to answer questions from a reporter after the Milwaukee Bucks' elimination from the NBA playoffs because she didn't subscribe to his podcast - just after he angrily threw a ball at fans twice. The Bucks' season came to an end on Thursday night when the Indiana Pacers booked their spot in the next round with a 120-98 Game Six win. Beverley had a night to forget both on and off the court. As tensions boiled over on the Milwaukee bench with the clock counting down towards their impending doom, he launched the ball twice into the stands.
