College career

Lopez's first season at Stanford University was 2006–07. He was an All-Pac-10 Honorable Mention and was voted to the All-Pac-10 Freshman Team. Over the course of his freshman season, he averaged 12.6 points and 6.0 rebounds. He averaged 19.3 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 2.1 blocks per game last season. Lopez defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 82-81 in the second round of the 2008 NCAA tournament, with a game-winning shot at the buzzer against the Marquette Golden Eagles for a 82–81 overtime victory. He was named to the All-Pac-10 First Team and an All-American Third Team in his sophomore season. Both Lopez brothers received the 2008 NBA draft on March 31, 2008.

Professional career

Lopez was drafted by the New Jersey Nets in the tenth overall. The Phoenix Suns' twin brother, Robin, was drafted 15th overall. Lopez won by 95 percent in his first NBA game on October 29, 2008. Lopez came off the bench and had 8 points, 8 rebounds, and 2 blocks in 25 minutes in his first game. After Josh Boone's injury kept him out of the line-up, Lopez began putting up good numbers for the team, and later this season he began posting solid numbers. Lopez was chosen to participate in the 2009 NBA All-Star Weekend Rookie Challenge. Lopez played in all 82 games of the regular season in his rookie season, averaging 13.0 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game. With 1.9, which was first among rookies, he came in 4th in total blocks with 154 and 9th in blocks per game. He came third in the NBA Rookie of the Year award voting and was selected to the All-Rookie first team. In the months of January and February, he was selected as NBA Rookie of the Month twice. The Nets finished 34-48, losing to qualify for the playoffs.

The Nets got off to a slow start to a season in NBA history in 2009, going 0-18. The Nets fired head coach Lawrence Frank after getting off to a good start. Lopez made his 2014–15 season debut on November 3, 2014, after missing the first two games due to a foot injury. In a 129-127 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks on March 20, 2015, Lopez scored 32 points and a season-high 18 rebounds. He was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week for games played Monday, March 30 to Sunday, April 5. He led the Nets to a 3-1 week behind team-leading averages of 20.8 points (sixth in the conference), 10.3 rebounds (fourth in the conference), and 2.0 blocks (tied-fifth in the conference).

Lopez opted out of his Nets deal to become a free agent on June 26, 2015.

Lopez re-signed with the Nets on July 9, 2015, ending his three-year contract. Lopez became the sixth player to make 400 starts for the Nets franchise on December 8, when Buck Williams (633), Jason Kidd (504), Richard Jefferson (417), and Jason Collins (405). Lopez made nine field goals and retired Vince Carter (3,126) for second in franchise history on December 26, in a loss to the Washington Wizards. Lopez scored eight points, five rebounds, and three blocks in a 127-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on October 19, 2021, where he made his Bucks debut in 2021. He was out indefinitely with a back injury after that game. There was no timetable planned for his return. He underwent surgery for the injury on December 2 and was officially ruled out indefinitely. Lopez scored 6 points, 1 rebound, 1 assist, and 1 steal in a victory over the Utah Jazz on March 14, 2022. As the Bucks defeated the Chicago Bulls in the regular season, Lopez had a team-high 28 points and three blocks in a 127-106 victory.
