Patricia "Patty" MacLachlan (born March 3, 1938) is an American children's writer best known for the 1986 Newbery Medal-winning book Sarah, Plain and Tall, which was later released as a TV film starring Glenn Close and Christopher Walken. She is a board member of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, a nationwide not-for-profit that advocates for literacy, literature, and libraries.

Early life

MacLachlan was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming, on March 3, 1938. Philo's father, Philo, was a philosopher of education, and Madonna, her mother, was an American English tutor before becoming a homemaker. When she was five years old, her family moved to Rochester, Minnesota, then relocating to Connecticut after she completed elementary as well as middle school. MacLachlan studied English at the University of Connecticut, graduating with a bachelor's degree in 1962.

Personal life

In 1962, MacLachlan married Robert MacLachlan. They met while she was enrolled in Yale University and married before his death in 2015. They had three children together: John, Emily, and Jamison. She lived in western Massachusetts and collected a small bag of dirt from the prairies to remind her of her Wyoming roots.

Patricia MacLachlan died on March 31, 2022, at her Williamsburg, Massachusetts home. She was 84 years old.

Career

MacLachlan first served as an English tutor at Bennett Junior High School in Manchester, Connecticut, from 1963 to 1979. At this time, she was also employed by a family services firm. After her children started attending kindergarten, she began writing at the age of 35. Arthur is the author of her first book, Sick Day, which came out the following year. Sarah, Plain and Tall, was named Newbery Medal for her book Sarah, Plain and Tall, six years ago. In 1991, it was released as a TV movie starring Glenn Close and Christopher Walken, with MacLachlan as one of its screenwriters. The two actors revived their roles in the sequel Skylark two years later. In 1995 and 2000, her novels Journey (1991) and Baby (1993) were also modified for television.

MacLachlan wrote over 60 children's books in her career. Emily MacLachlan Charest, a mother from Emily MacLachlan Charest, and her daughter Emily MacLachlan Charest later collaborated to produce several picture books during the latter part of her career. These included Once I Ate a Pie (2006), Fiona Loves the Night (2005), I Didn't Do It (2010), Cat Talk (2013), and Little Robot Alone. In 2002, MacLachlan received the National Humanities Medal. She served on the board of the National Children's Book and Literacy Alliance, a national not-for-profit that actively advocates for literacy, literature, and libraries.
