Andrew Clements Life

Andrew Clements (May 29, 1949-1999) was an American writer of many children's books.

In about twenty different U.S. states, his debut novel Frindle was chosen annually by the vote of U.S. schoolchildren.

In June 2015, it was named as the best book to not win a major award when it was first published in 1996.

Life

Clements was born in Camden, New Jersey, and spent time in nearby Oaklyn and Cherry Hill before heading to Springfield, Illinois, as a pre-teen. He loved summers at a lakeside cabin in Maine, where he spent his days swimming, hiking, water skiing, and evenings reading books. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English Literature and a Masters of Arts in Elementary Education from National Louis University, sharing his love of reading with elementary, middle, and high school students.

He worked with many publishing companies where he sold, acquired, edited, marketed, and produced high-quality children's books. Clements introduced Bird Delbert, his own illustration book, to the market in 1985. His first book was the award-winning Frindle, which has received 16 state book awards as well as the Christopher Award.

Clements was married to Rebecca Pierpont, and the three boys were born. On November 28, 2019, he died at his home in Baldwin, Maine, at the age of 70.
