Olivier Theyskens Career

Career

Theyskens exhibited works from his collection "Gloomy Trips" to a Belgian group exhibition. For the 1998 Academy Awards, Stylist Arianne Phillips saw photographs of his work and dressed Madonna. André Leon Talley rated the outfit as one of his favorite Oscar dresses of all time.

In 1998, Theyskens unveiled his first complete collection in Paris. The collection was a revival of eighteenth-century style that reworked traditional French fabrics. He was named on Vogue's list of the "Most Unfortable Runway Shows of the 1990s" by the fall 2000 decade. "Theyskens has established himself as one of the most influential creative personalities in fashion." That year, he received the Venus de la Mode award. According to Vogue, the collection he unveiled in Fall 2001 "was unquestionably one of the season's most spectacular collections." Theyskens' line survived until 2002.

Theyskens founded Rochas in 2002 and unveiled his first collection for the House of Rochas in 2003, where he created a "completely new silhouette for the house" that was French-influenced and chic. Theyskens created costumes for Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie, as well as costumes for Verdi's opera I due Foscari. In 2005, Theyskens was given the Fashion Group International's Star Award at their 22nd Annual Night of Stars Gala.

Procter & Gamble, Rochas' parent company, announced the discontinuance of Rochas' fashion division in July 2006 because it was the only fashion market in the region, and Procter & Gamble did not have the capabilities or expertise to continue producing ready-to-wear fashion. Theyskens was awarded the International Award by the Council of Fashion Designers of America in 2006.

Theyskens joined Nina Ricci in November 2006 as the company's artistic director, where his attention was shifted to a younger, more casual style. His collections for Nina Ricci's House of Innation were greeted with critical acclaim.

Theyskens left Nina Ricci in fall 2009 and was replaced by Peter Copping, the former creative director of Louis Vuitton.

In spring 2010, Theory CEO Andrew Rosen hired Theyskens to create a capsule collection for Theory. In October 2010, Theyskens was appointed artistic director of the company. He left Theory in June 2014 to work on other design projects. Theory's last collection was pre-spring 2015.

Theyskens launched his first collection under his own name in 2016. The brand was completely self-funded.

Theyskens was named artistic director of Azzaro in 2020, with responsibility for the brand's couture collections, ready-to-wear lines, and accessories for both women and men; he succeeded Maxime Simons.
