Personal life

Kenneth Ekman, a defenseman, was selected to represent Sweden at the 1972 Winter Olympics, according to Ekman-Larsson's maternal grandfather, Kenneth Ekman, who was also a defenceman. Amanda Ilestedt, a Swedish international footballer, is Ekman-Larsson's cousin. Kevin, Ekman-Larsson's younger brother, was previously signed with the Tucson Roadrunners, Coyotes' AHL affiliate. He now plays for BIK Karlskoga, Sweden's second-tier club.

Oliver Ekman-Larsson Career

Playing career

During the 2007-08 season, Ekman-Larsson spent his time with the Tingsryds AIF hockey club of the HockeyAllsvenskan, scoring 8 points in 27 games. In two seasons, Leksands IF, where he scored 44 points in 2008–09 and 2009–10 in a total of 81 games, he continued his career. This season will be his last as he will be drafted by the Phoenix Coyotes in the National Hockey League.

In the 2009 NHL Entry Draft, Ekman-Larsson was ranked sixth overall by Phoenix. On May 24, 2010, the Coyotes reported that Ekman-Larsson had signed Ekman-Larsson to an entry-level position. Despite missing several games while competing in the 2010 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships for Sweden, Ekman-Larsson recorded the second-most points among junior players in the Allsvenskan, despite missing several games during the season.

On October 23, 2010, Ekman-Larsson scored his first NHL point as a result of his help on a Kyle Turris goal. On January 17, 2011, he scored his first NHL goal against San Jose Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi.

Ekman-Larsson (on the last year of his entry-level deal) was assigned to the Portland Pirates, Phoenix's American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate for the duration of the 2012–13 NHL lockout.

In a 5–2 win over the Montreal Canadiens on 6 March 4, Ekman-Larsson scored his 100th NHL career point in his career career. It was the first time since the Coyotes had defeated Montréal due to Ekman-Larsson's contribution. In 2013, Ekman-Larsson finished seventh in balloting for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, which is given annually to the NHL's best defenseman during the regular season. Three first-place votes, one second-place election, and two third-place votes were among his results. After scoring his third goal by a player in a single season on December 16, 2014, the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Edmonton Oilers by 0.03 seconds left in overtime in a 2–1 win. In the 2015 NHL All-Star Game, Ekman-Larsson played for Arizona, assisting on a goal by Bobby Ryan. With 23 goals and 20 assists, Ekman-Larsson completed the 2014-2015 season. With this career milestone, Ekman-Larsson tied Nicklas Lidström's NHL record, becoming the first Swedish-born defenceman to score more than 20 goals in a season. Ekman-Larsson's 23 goals were the most goals scored by a defenseman in a season, beating Phil Housley's franchise record for the most goals scored by a defenseman in a season.

Ekman-Larsson scored the fastest shorthanded goal in NHL history against Jonathan Bernier five seconds into the third period on January 29, 2015. Ekman-Larsson scored the lone goal of the game on December 19, 2015, which was the game-winning goal. With this aim, Ekman-Larsson tied for the most game-winning goals by a defenseman with the 20th in his career, beating Teppo Numminen's franchise record for the most game-winning goals by a defenseman. Ekman-Larsson scored all three goals of rookie Max Domi's first career hat-trick on January 12th and would go on to record a career-high four-point record against the Edmonton Oilers on January 12, 2016. In a 3–1 victory over the Dallas Stars on March 24, Ekman-Larsson inadvertently scored the game-winning goal. Originally credited to teammate Martin Hanzal, but after further investigation, the goal was shown to bounce off a Dallas player and into the goal. With this game-winning goal, Ekman-Larsson tied for the most game-winning goals by a defenceman in a single season, beating Tim Horton, Al MacInnis, Ray Bourque, Derek Morris, and Dion Phaneuf. After Phil Housley, he became the second defenceman in franchise history to reach 20 or more goals in a row. In balloting for the James Norris Memorial Trophy, Ekman-Larsson finished ninth on the 2015–16 season.

Ekman-Larsson scored his 40th powerplay goal in his career (against Pekka Rinne), tying Fredrik Olausson for the most defenseman in the Arizona Coyotes/Winnipeg Jets history. Following a lengthy fight with cancer, Ekman-Larsson was granted a leave of absence for the remaining three regular seasons games in order to return to Sweden due to his mother's death.

Ekman-Larsson scored his first powerplay goal of the season against Anton Khudobin on October 14th, beating Fredrik Olausson for the franchise's highest powerplay goals scored by a defenceman with his 41st. On January 10, 2018, Ekman-Larsson was selected as the lone Coyotes representative for the 2018 NHL All-Star Game. Ekman-Larsson was fined $5,000 for cutting Sven Andrighetto on March 10th. Following the conclusion of the regular season and the Coyotes' inability to make the playoffs, Ekman-Larsson was nominated for the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, which is given to the player who best exemplifies leadership abilities both on and off the ice and gives back to his families. Ekman-Larsson, a former employee of the Coyotes, signed an eight-year, $66 million contract extension on July 1st; the following season, he would have become a free agent. He was later dubbed captain of the Coyotes.

Ekman-Larsson waived his no-movement guarantee and was traded to the Vancouver Canucks in exchange for Jay Beagle, Loui Eriksson, Antoine Roussel, 2021 first-round pick, and a 2023 seventh-round pick. As part of the sale, Arizona retained twelve percent of Ekman-Larsson's salary. In a 3-2 shootout loss to the Edmonton Oilers on October 13, 2021, he scored his first goal as a Canuck on October 13, 2021. Ekman-Larsson's first game back at the Arizona Coyotes on April 7, 2022, he had an assist in a 5-1 win.
