Oliver Jasen Burke (born 7 April 1997) is a Scottish professional footballer who plays for Alavés in La Liga on loan from West Bromwich Albion and Scotland's national team. He came through Nottingham Forest's academy, earning his first appearance in February and September 2014.

Burke joined RB Leipzig in August for a reported £13 million, a record for a Scottish player.

He returned to England a year later, after helping Leipzig to runner-up status in the league, by signing for West Bromwich Albion for £15 million.

Club career

Burke was born in Kirkcaldy, Scotland, but he grew up in Melton Mowbray, Leicestershire, England, where he joined local club Mowbray Rangers aged eight. He was scouted to join Nottingham Forest's Academy, where he continued for the next nine years after one season with the club. Burke signed his first professional deal with Nottingham Forest on September 19, 2014, before making his professional debut as an 87th-minute replacement during a 3–1 loss against Tottenham Hotspur on September 24th. In a 4–4 draw against Blackpool on February 14, he made his league debut on February 14th as a 64th-minute replacement.

Burke was signed on a month-long loan to Bradford City, a League One club. In a 2–1 loss to Swindon Town, he made his debut for them on the same day, playing for 75 minutes in a 2–1 loss. Burke got off to a 2–0 loss against Peterborough United on February 28th and appeared twice as an unutilized replacement before returning to his parent club. Burke came to an end when his loan term with Bradford City came to an end, and he committed to Forest for three years.

Burke has extended his deal with the club for another three years as a result of the 2015–16 season. Burke played for the club's reserves until he was called up by manager Dougie Freedman, who Burke regarded as his mentor. Burke scored his first goal for Forest on December 29th from a curling shot struck with the outside of his right foot against Cardiff City. At the Cardiff City Stadium, nine minutes into the game, which ended 1–1. Burke scored his second goal for the club on January 16, 2016, defeating Bolton Wanderers 3–0. On February 29, the actor's career on a four-year contract was extended once more. Burke ended the 2015–16 season with twenty-one appearances in all sports and scoring twice.

Burke made a name for herself in the pre-season friendlies, scoring three times in six games. Burke scored in the first game of the season, a 4–3 victory over Burton Albion, and scored a brace against Wigan Athletic two weeks later. Burke scored on his last game for Forest on August 27, a 3–1 loss of Leeds United. Burke's early season form and success piqued the attention of top European and Premier League clubs, including Bayern Munich, Manchester United, Sunderland, and Liverpool. Montanier denied rumors of Burke leaving Forest, but he denied the suggestion.

Burke joined Fawaz Al-Hasawi, the club's owner, outraged, after the club's owner, Fawaz Al-Hasawi, on a five-year deal for an undisclosed fee. BBC Sport announced the contract to be worth about £13 million, a new record for a transfer involving a Scottish player.

Burke came on after 69 minutes in place of Yussuf Poulsen's home Bundesliga game against Borussia Dortmund on September ten, and on his debut for Leipzig, a home Bundesliga match against Borussia Dortmund, on September 10th, he scored the only goal. In a 1–1 draw at 1., fifteen days later, he opened the scoring in a 1–1 draw at 1. FC Köln is the first Scot to score in Germany's top flight since Brian O'Neil for VfL Wolfsburg in November 1999.

Despite this early fame, Burke was regularly used as a substitute by Leipzig. His teaching staff praised his physical appearance, but they challenged his tactical knowledge.

Burke returned to English football on August 25, 2017 after being transferred to West Bromwich Albion for a reported fee of £15 million, tying his own record as the most expensive Scottish footballer. He has been with the West Midlands club for five years. Despite the fact that Burke could play in the Champions League with Leipzig, he suggested West Bromwich Albion for more game time.

He made his goalscorer Jay Rodriguez for the final two minutes of a 1-1 home draw against Stoke City two days later. In a 2–1 group stage loss to Coventry City on November 7, owing to a hamstring injury, he made just one other substitute appearance by mid-November and joined the under-21 team in the EFL Trophy under the EFL Trophy.

Burke scored his first goal for the Baggies on August 14, 2018 in a home win over Luton Town in the first round of the EFL Cup on August 14th. He made just six appearances in the first half of the season, three of whom were in the Championship, with three others in the Championship.

Burke went on loan to Celtic from January 5 to the end of the season on January 5th. He made his debut two weeks later, playing the full 90 minutes of a 3–0 home win over Airdrieonians in the Scottish Cup. In a 4–0 victory over St Mirren, he appeared as a striker on his Scottish Premiership debut, losing both Leigh Griffiths and Odsonne Édouard twice and scoring twice.

Burke was loaned to Alavés, a La Liga club, for the season on August 30. Burke made his professional debut with his new team in their 1–0 loss to Sevilla on September 15th. In a 2–1 La Liga win over Eibar on February 7, 2020, he scored his first goal for Alavés.

Callum Robinson left Sheffield United in September 2020 after signing Burke from West Brom. Burke has been with the Blades for three years. In a 2–1 away league victory over Manchester United on January 27-2021, clinching the Blades' first league victory over the Red Devils since 1992 and their first victory at Old Trafford in Premier League history since 1973.

Burke joined Millwall on loan until the end of the 2021–22 season on January 21, 2022.

Burke, who was unemployed at Sheffield United in June 2022, returned to the Bundesliga in June 2022, joining newly promoted Werder Bremen. He is said to have joined a free transfer.

Burke scored his first goal for Bremen on August 13, 2022, netting late to draw a 2–2 draw with VfB Stuttgart. In a dramatic, come-from-behind 3–2 victory over Borussia Dortmund last week, he scored the deciding goal.

International career

Burke was destined to play for England in place of Scotland, having been brought up south of the border from a young age, but he preferred to play for his country of origins. On his debut for the team, he was called up by Scotland U19 and scored on his debut for the team, a 3–1 victory over Mexico U18 on October 6, 2015. He made six appearances for the team.

Burke received his first call-up to Scotland's senior Scotland squad on March 10th, 2016 for their friendly match against Denmark. In the 1–0 victory at Hampden Park 19 days later, he made his 82nd-minute replacement for goalscorer Matt Ritchie in his 82nd appearance.

In the 2017 Toulon Tournament, he was left out of the full squad and was instead selected for an under-20 squad. In a 3–2 loss to the Czech Republic, Burke scored both goals. In the second match, Scotland defeated Brazil for the first time ever as captain. The team is likely to win the bronze medal. It was the nation's first medal at the tournament.

Burke was selected in the under-21 squad of the 2017–18 season. He made his debut at that level on September 5th, scoring his first goal in a 2–0 victory over the Netherlands. As Scotland finished in fourth place in the 2018 Toulon Tournament, Burke scored goals against France and South Korea. He was the only player to miss in the penalty shootout loss in the third round of the Turkish penalty shootout, with Altay Bayndr saving his attempt.

Burke was recalled to the full international squad in March 2019 and scored his first senior goal in Scotland's 2–1 victory over Cyprus on June 8th.
