Anunoby Jr., O.G. (born July 17, 1997) is a British professional basketball player for the National Basketball Association (NBA).

He played college basketball for the Indiana Hoosiers.

Early life

Obedoby Jr., the son of Nigerian parents, was born in London's Harlesden neighborhood on July 17th. Oriol Sr., his father, a historian in England at the time, worked as a professor. When he was a year old, his mother died of cancer. Anunoby and his family migrated to the United States and settled in Jefferson City, Missouri, where his father was a professor of finance at Lincoln University at the age of four. Chigbo's older brother, who played for the Cleveland Browns, Tennessee Titans, and Minnesota Vikings before going to medical school. Anunoby played football when he was younger but decided against basketball later in life due to his height.

Anunoby attended Jefferson City High School. He averaged 19.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game during his senior season and was named a finalist for Mr Basketball in the state of Missouri. Anunoby opted for Indiana University over Georgia, Iowa, George Mason, and Ole Miss in October 2014.

Personal life

"It's definitely a goal of mine to inspire children in the United Kingdom to play basketball and show that they can make it to the NBA from Britain," Anunoby said. He is also a fan of Arsenal FC, a football fan.

College career

Anunoby, a freshman at Indiana, appeared in 34 games, averaging 6.9 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 0.6 assists per game.

According to The Sporting News, Anunoby was selected as a Pre-season All-American. Anunoby sustained his right knee against Penn State on January 18, causing him to have season-ending knee surgery. Anunoby declared on April 10, 2017 that he intends to draft a player rather than recruiting an agent, putting an end to his time with the Hoosiers.

Professional career

He was selected with the Toronto Raptors' 23rd overall pick in the 2017 NBA draft on June 22, 2017. He signed his rookie scale with the Raptors on July 9th. Anunoby made his first appearance against the Houston Rockets on November 14th. In 30 minutes, he finished the game with 16 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. In addition to having the third highest scoring percentage and highest turnover-to-assist ratio for a non-guard, he led starter rookies in offensive and defensive ratings by December 15th.

Anunoby was appointed a member of the United Kingdom's World Team representing the UK in the 2019 Rising Stars Challenge on January 29. Anunoby had an emergency appendectomy in April 2019, which caused him to miss the bulk of the Raptors' championship playoffs. He trained for the NBA Finals but didn't participate as the Raptors went on to win the crown, becoming the first British player to win an NBA championship.

In a 133-118 loss to the Denver Nuggets on March 1, 2019, Anunoby scored 32 points and collected seven steals, as well as seven rebounds and three assists. In a 104-103 victory over the Boston Celtics in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals on September 3, he made a game-winning buzzer beater three-pointer and finished with 12 points. The Raptors were kept from falling to a 0-3 deficit to the Celtics due to the buzzer beater. The Raptors will eventually lose in seven games. He signed a four-year, $72 million contract extension from December 21st, to the 2024-25 season. In a 107-102 victory over the Indiana Pacers on January 24, 2021, Anunoby scored a season-high 30 points, one assist, five steals, and a block. He joins former Raptor Kawhi Leonard as the only franchise players to win multiple games, five rebounds, and five steals. Anunoby scored a career-high 36 points, as well as 6 rebounds and 2 assists with the Knicks' victory on November 1st.

Anunoby was sidelined after suffering a right finger fracture against the Charlotte Hornets on February 25th. Anunoby was forced to miss two weeks to recover his fractured finger by March 3rd.
