Nolan Derek Smith (born July 25, 1988) is an American former professional basketball player and current Duke Blue Devils men's basketball coach.

He played college basketball for Duke before being drafted 21st overall by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 2011 NBA draft.

As a junior, he started shooting guard for Duke's national champion 2010 squad.

He was named first-team All-American and the ACC Player of the Year as a senior.

Early life

Smith, the then-former NBA player who played in 1996, was a regular attender at Washington Bullets practices as a kid. The Bullets made him a regular visitor at their home games following the tragic death of his father in 1996.

High school career

Smith played varsity basketball at The Key School in Annapolis, Maryland, before heading to St. John's College High School in Washington, D.C., for his freshman year in 2003. At St. John's, he was a third-team all-conference pick, with 10.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 2.1 steals per game.

Smith attended Riverdale Baptist School in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, as a sophomore in 2004-05. As he led Riverdale to a 33–1 record and later earned third-team All-Metro honors, he averaged 16 points, six rebounds, eight assists, and three steals per game.

Smith played for his junior and senior years at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Virginia, where he was a two-year captain and competed with many future NBA players, including Michael Beasley, Ty Lawson, and Brandon Jennings. He averaged 17 points, five rebounds, five assists, and two steals per game in 2005–06 as he helped Oak Hill to a 40–1 overall record and a final USA Today No. 61. 1st in the country's top 50. He then received EA Sports second-team All-America recognitions.

Smith signed a National Letter of Intent to play college basketball for Duke University on November 13, 2006.

Smith led his team to a 40–1 record and helping Oak Hill gain the top spot in the final USA Today 2007 Super 25 national rankings, posting averages of 22.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.2 assists, and 3.2 steals per game as a senior. Since leading Oak Hill to the championship, he received first-team EA Sports and Parade All-American recognition and was named to the Les Schwab Invitational all-tournament squad. He has also been named in McDonald's All-American honors.

Smith, who was described as the No. 1 on Rivals.com, was considered a four-star recruiter. The No. 8 is the 8-gunner and the No. 1. In 2007, there was 39 players in the country.

College career

Smith appeared in all 34 games from 2007-08, with one starting position as he averaged 5.9 points, 1.5 rebounds, and 1.3 assists in 14.7 minutes per game. He made his first collegiate appearance against Cornell on January 6, 2008, scoring nine points on 4-of-6 shooting, while still scoring in double figures six times, including a season-high 21 points against Wake Forest on February 17.

Smith averaged 8.4 points, 2.2 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game as a sophomore in 2008-2009. With 17 points, he finished fourth on the team in double-figure scoring games. On November 21, 2008, he scored a season-high 16 points, as well as five rebounds and four assists, against Michigan.

Smith played in a non-sanctioned summer league game as a junior in 2009-2010. He played 38 games out of the first two games of the season. He had 17.4 points, 2.8 rebounds, 3.0 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. He led the Blue Devils in field goals; came in second in assists, steals, and three-point field goal percentage; and third on the team in scoring; three-point field goals, free throw percentage, and minutes; and minutes. He continued to earn second-team All-ACC recognition and received the NAB All-District III and NABC Second Team All-District 2 awards in addition to his USBWA All-District III and NABC Second Team All-District 2 awards.

As Duke defeated Baylor and advanced to the Final Four on March 28, 2010, Smith scored a then-high 29 points on 9-of-17 from the field on March 28, 2010. Smith (628 points), Jon Scheyer (690 points), and Kyle Singler (667 points) became the second trio in Duke history to score at least 600 points in a season; in 2001–02, Jay Williams, Carlos Boozer, Jr. first accomplished it for Duke.

Smith led Duke to an NCAA championship win and earned him a spot on the NCAA All-Final Four team. In victories over West Virginia and Butler, he averaged 16 points and five assists per game.

Smith played 37 games from 2010 to 11, averaging of 20.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, 5.1 assists, and 1.2 steals per game. After becoming the 11th Duke player to lead the league in scoring, he was named the 12th ACC Player of the Year in school history. Since leading Duke to a 32–5 record and his third straight NCAA championship, he earned first-team All-Defensive team and ACC All-Defensive team awards, as well as NABC and USBWA first-team All-District All-District champions. He was also a finalist for the Naismith Trophy, Wooden Award, Oscar Robertson Trophy, and Bob Cousy Award.

Smith scored a career-high 34 points in a home win over No. 9 on February 9, 2011. 20 North Carolina is on a career-high 13 field goal attempts.

Smith and fellow senior Kyle Singler were the team captain in 2010-2011. He was well-known among his peers as teammates flocked to him in the locker room due to his passion for the game and his ability to remain upbeat and loose in high-pressure situations. He was the ninth player under Mike Krzyzewski to reach over 20.0 points per game, his 764 total points in 2010-11, his ninth highest single season total figure, and his ninth appearance in a Duke player.

Professional career

Smith was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers with the 21st overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft. He signed his rookie scale with the Trail Blazers on December 9, 2011. He played 44 games (four starts) and averaged 3.8 points, 1.4 assists, and 1.3 rebounds in 12.3 minutes per game as a rookie.

Smith signed him up for the 2012 NBA Summer League in July 2012, but he played just two games after being suspended for the remainder of the game after being ruled out for the remainder of the season on July 17. He was put out on a stretcher and the game was called off with 27 seconds remaining to play. He was released from Las Vegas Hospital later that day, after blood tests came back to normal.

Smith was sent to the Idaho Stampede of the NBA Development League on January 6, 2013. After playing in both of Idaho's games at the 2013 NBA D-League Showcase in Reno, he was recalled by the Trail Blazers on January 9. In 38.6 minutes per game, he averaged 22.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.5 assists, and 1.0 steals, earning him the Showcase honorable mention award. In 40 games, he finished his sophomore season with 2.8 points, 0.6 rebounds, and 0.9 assists.

Smith played just one game and scored four points in the 2013 NBA Summer League, where he was with the Boston Celtics for just one game and scored four points.

Smith signed a one-year contract with Cedevita Zagreb of the Croatian League on August 18, 2013. Since winning his team's spot in the 2014-20 Euroleague after three seconds left, he attracted a lot of media attention across the region, ensuring his squad's participation in the 2014–15 Euroleague and the first time since ULEB tookover the sport in 2000.

Smith appeared in five games for the Oklahoma City Thunder in July 2014, averaging of 4.6 points, 1.4 rebounds, and 2.0 assists.

Smith signed a one-year contract with Galatasaray Liv Hospital in Istanbul, Turkey's Basketball League, on August 29, 2014. After being subbed out in a Turkish League match against Banvit, he threw a towel while being banned from the arena, and head coach Ergin Ataman barred him from the arena. He later apologised for the incident. On October 27, 2014, he left Galatasaray.

Smith was acquired by the Delaware 87ers of the NBA Development League on November 26, 2014. He was released by the 87ers on January 15, 2015.

Coaching career

Smith joined the Duke Blue Devils coaching staff as a special assistant on February 22, 2016. He was then promoted to director of basketball operations & player growth in March 2018, and as an assistant coach in April 2021.

Smith joined the Louisville Cardinals coaching staff under Kenny Payne on April 4, 2022. Derek Smith, Smith's father, played for Louisville and was a member of Louisville's 1980 championship team.
