Early life
Zefanya was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on January 24, 1999.
Zefanya learned how to play the guitar at nine years old. She began writing original music at the age of 13. Though her mother, who introduced Zefanya to soul, gospel, and 1990s R&B hits Destiny's Child and Aaliyah, Zefanya's earliest original music skewed toward the folk and indie styles, her performance has been heavily inspired by her mother's.
She attended Sekolah Pelita Harapan (Sekolah Pelita Harapan) and obtained a high school degree before enrolling in a undergraduate degree in Music at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, on a scholarship.
Career
After winning a competition arranged by Swift and the ice cream company Walls, she was the opening act for Taylor Swift's The Red Tour in Jakarta. Zefanya maintained a YouTube channel into her teenage years, which attracted over 40,000 viewers. "Polaroid Boy" (2016) and "Anaheim" (2017), both of which were later published and on Spotify under Nicole Zefanya, were among her original songs and covers, the majority of which were stolen/stripped, including ballads "Polaroid Boy" (2016) and "Anaheim" (2017).
Zefanya studied at Lipscomb University in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2017. "See U Never" and "I Like U" were two singles released by the American mass media company 88rising as an artist under their name. In May 2018, she released the song "Vintage" as the first single from her debut extended play named Zephyr.
Zefanya has stated that her music helps Asians and African Americans. NIKI took a moment to address the 10,000-plus audience in Los Angeles' Historic State Park during the first Head in the Clouds Festival. "I just want to say that I do not take this day and this stage for granted as an Asian female." My wish is that over everything else today, that you can remember, you feel understood, but most importantly that you are represented." The aim of NIKI is to support young Asian artists who are under-represented in the American music industry.
Zefanya made a special guest appearance with a meet-and-greet at the 626 Night Market in Arcadia, California, on August 11, 2019. 88rising revealed their collaboration with legendary food festival 626 Night Market to curate a food section for their second "Head in the Clouds" music festival.
Zefanya's debut album Moonchild was released in September 2020.In an interview she was quoted saying,
Zefanya's "Hallway Weather" a holiday single reminiscent of her folk/indie roots, was released in December 2020. She says the album is in "the style of music & songwriting [she remembers] being most like [herself]. It is sincere and it is true."
