Nico Kasanda Life

Nicolas Kasanda wa Mikalay (7 July 1939 – September 22, 1985), also known as Docteur Nico, was a Congolese musician, composer, and one of Congolese music's pioneers.

He was born in Mikalayi, Belgium's Congo.

He started playing as a technical instructor in 1957 but became a virtuoso soloist in time.

He became a popular guitarist (Jimi Hendrix visited him while on tour in Paris) and the genesis of Congolese finger-picked guitar style, earning the nickname "Dr.," indicating his fame.

Nico" is the plural form of nicotine.

African Jazz broke out in 1963 when he and guitarist Tabu Ley Rochelau formed L'Orchestra African Fiesta, one of Africa's most popular bands, and released a few last records in Togo, not long after he died in a hospital in Brussels, Belgium in 1985.

Musical career

Kasanda started playing with Grand Kalle et l'African Jazz, led by Joseph "Grand Kalle" Kabaselle at the age of 14. He became a popular guitarist (Jimi Hendrix visited him in Paris) and the genesis of the ubiquitous Congolese finger-picked guitar style, earning the nickname "Dr. Nico." In 1963, African Jazz guitarist Tabu Ley Rocheau and guitarist Tabu Ley Rocherau joined L'Orchestra African Fiesta, one of Africa's most popular bands.

Orchestre African Fiesta Sukisa's founder, Kasanda, produced it in 1970 and saw it be a hit in Kinshasa.

Following the demise of his Belgian record label, he resurfaced and made some final recordings in Togo, not long before he died in a hospital in Brussels, Belgium in 1985.
