Ellen Taaffe Zwilich (born April 30, 1939, in Miami, Florida) is the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize for Music.

Atonal discovery informed her early works, but by the 1980s, she had shifted to a post-modernist, neo-romantic style.

"One of America's most frequently performed and genuinely popular living composers," she has been described as "one of America's most frequently performed and genuinely popular living composers." She was a 1994 inductee into the Florida Artists Hall of Fame.

Zwilich is currently an Francis Eppes Distinguished Professor at Florida State University.

Musical career

Taaffe Zwilich's compositional style is characterized by his obsession with "the possibility of producing an entire work – large-scale structure, melodic and harmonic language, and developmental processes – starting from its beginnings." In comparison to large orchestral works such as Symbolon (1988), Symphony No. 146. 2 (Cello Symphony) (1985), and Symphony No. No. She has written a number of important, smaller-scale concertos, beginning in 1992. These include trombone (1988), bass trombone (1989), flute (1989), oboe (1990), trumpet (1993), and clarinet (2002). In addition, she has written a few choral works and song cycles. Pierre Boulez, a Juilliard student, conducted her performance in 1975. After winning the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for her Symphony No. 5, she had a major breakthrough. 1. Following this, she was selected to work on two more symphonies, for the San Francisco Symphony and the New York Philharmonic's 150th anniversary. Symbolon has been performed in Europe, Asia, and America.
