Neil Dudgeon (born 2 January 1961) is an English actor who has appeared in the ITV drama series Midsomer Murders since 2011.
In the lead role, he took over John Nettles.
Early life and education
Dudgeon was the son of James C Dudgeon and June M Weeks, and she had an older sister Lynne W Dudgeon. He was born in 1961 and grew up in Doncaster, Yorkshire, but now in South Yorkshire. Among others, he attended Intake Secondary Modern School in Doncaster. He appeared in several school plays (including Rosencrantz and Guildernstern are Dead) and moved on to study drama at the University of Bristol (1979-82).
Career
In 1987, Dudgeon made his first screen appearance. Tim Woodward, Jeremy Northam, and Nathaniel Parker appeared as a Second World War pilot in Piece of Cake the following year.
In addition to occasional appearances in series such as Casualty, Burning, and Lovejoy, George Costello played as George the Chauffeur in The Mrs Bradley Mysteries (1994–1999), Out of the Blue, Sherlock Holmes, The Street, and four series of Messiah with Ken Stott, along with occasional appearances in series such as Casualty, London's Burning and Lovejoy.
He appeared in the romantic comedy film Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, portraying the taxi driver who takes the title character to meet Mark Darcy (played by Colin Firth).
In 2007, Dudgeon appeared in the eponymous role of self-made millionaire Roman Pretty in the BBC2 sitcom Roman's Empire. In 2009, he appeared as a main character in BBC's Life of Riley, a series that recommissioned and premiered in April 2011, the same month that Dudgeon appeared in the TV drama United, which was based on the events of the 1958 Munich air disaster involving Manchester United.
In 2010, Dudgeon appeared in "The Sword of Guillaume," an ITV crime vizualization drama, starring Laurie Paddock. He was introduced in the episode as Detective Chief Inspector Tom Barnaby's cousin, played by John Nettles, who later resigned from the role. After the last episodes starring John Nettles were broadcast in 2011, Dudgeon, also played as a senior detective, took over as the lead character in Midsomer Murders. Dudgeon's character name is DCI John Barnaby, which has been suggested as a way for continued sales to territories where the show is identified as "Inspector Barnaby." In the first episode of the fourth series ("Garden of Death"), Dudgeon appeared in Midsomer Murders for the first time as a secondary character.
Norman Birkett appeared in four plays written by Caroline and David Stafford based on Birkett's lives in 2012.
