Early life and education
Naughton was born and raised in East Orange, New Jersey, the daughter of Brenda, a part-time paralegal, and Ezra Naughton, a retired accountant. Her father is from St. Croix, the United States Virgin Islands, and her mother is from Raleigh, North Carolina. When she joined her church choir at New Hope Baptist Church (the same church where Whitney Houston sang in her youth) in Newark, New Jersey, she discovered her musical talent at the age of five years. She continued her musical studies at the Newark School of the Arts. In Montclair, New Jersey, she attended St. Joseph's Catholic school and Immaculate Conception High School. She has performed the national anthem at numerous functions in New Jersey and attended Seton Hall University.

Career
Adrienne Bailon and Kiely Williams joined the team in 1999, aged 15, helping to form the group 3LW. In the fall of 2000, their first single, "No More (Baby I'ma Do Right), was released. In early 2001, "No More" was a hit, and was followed by "Playas Gon' Play," in the second album. On December 5, 2000, the group's debut album, 3LW, was released. In the United States, the album became the first platinum album, selling 1.3 million copies. Destiny's Child, Dream, Nelly, Eve, and Jessica Simpson joined the MTV TRL tour in the summer of 2001.
3LW spent the first half of 2002 in the studio, recording an album tentatively titled Same Game, Different Rules. The album and its intended lead single "Uh Oh" were resold on the chain, who claimed that there was not enough urban radio exposure. Both Game and Different Rules were leaked on the internet in MP3 form, and Epic considered removing the band. The act was retained as a result of a fan support drive for 3LW, 'Never Let Go of 3LW'. 3LW returned in the summer of 2002 with the single "I Do (Wanna Get Close To You) starring Loon, releasing a new series of songs.
When Naughton announced that she was no longer a member of the company, it was expected to debut A Girl Can Mack, the group's new LP, by August 2002.
