Early life
Dyer was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee. She has two siblings. She began acting in community theater as an infant and made her professional screen debut in Hannah Montana: The Movie, a documentary directed locally in Tennessee in 2008. Dyer graduated from the Nashville School of the Arts in the performing arts. She migrated to New York City and enrolled at New York University, studying at the Gallatin School of Individualized Study.

Dyer has been involved with Stranger Things co-star Charlie Heaton since 2016.
Career
Dyer began her career in early childhood, participating in projects built in and around her Tennessee home; her first screen role was as Clarissa Granger in Hannah Montana: The Movie in 2009. She appeared in the films The Greening of Whitney Brown and Blue Like Jazz before appearing in the small independent films Don't Let Me Go and After Darkness, which were released the following years.
She directed the indie film I Believe in Unicorns, which was her first big role when she first appeared. At the 2014 SXSW Film Festival, the film premiered three years later.
In the Netflix series Stranger Things, Dyer's breakthrough role was as Nancy Wheeler. Dyer has also appeared in independent films, most notably the dramedy film Yes, God, Yes (2019), in which she appears as Alice, a Catholic school girl investigating sexuality. Among her most notable appearances in Velvet Buzzsaw (2019) and Things Heard & Seen (2021), she is a psychologist. It was revealed in January 2022 that she would appear in the horror film All Fun and Games opposite Asa Butterfield.
