Nanci Griffith Career

Early life and career

Nanci Griffith, the youngest of three siblings, was born in Seguin, Texas, but her family moved to Austin soon after her birth. Ruelene's mother was a real estate agent and amateur actor, Marlin Griffith, was a graphic artist and barbershop quartetist. Nanci Griffith began her career as a singer in a local coffeehouse at the age of 12. Townes Van Zandt was her father's visit to see her as a child. She started working at the Red Lion Cabaret in downtown Austin at the age of 14. There's a Light Beyond These Woods, Nanci's debut album, was released in 1978, with a cover designed by her father.

Her career spanned many musical styles, mainly country, folk, and what she described as "folkabilly." In 1994, Griffith received a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Folk Album, Other Voices, Other Rooms. Griffith was interviewed on this album about artists who were her main influences. "From a Distance," Julie Gold's written and produced, was one of her best-known songs, but Bette Midler's interpretation achieved greater commercial success. In the same way, other musicians have had occasions when performing songs she wrote or co-wrote was more popular than Griffith herself. Kathy Mattea, for example, had a top-five hit with a 1986 version of Griffith's "Love at the Five and Dime," and Suzy Boge had one of her most popular hits with Griffith's and Tom Russell's "Outbound Plane."

Griffith teamed up with Jimmy Webb in 1994 to perform "If These Old Walls Could Speak" on the Red Hot Company's AIDS relief album Red Hot Country. Griffith was a survivor of breast cancer diagnosed in 1996 and thyroid cancer in 1998.

Christine Lavin remembers the first time she saw Griffith perform: she recalled it.

Griffith toured with various other performers, including Buddy Holly's band, the Crickets, and John Prine; Suzy Bogs; and Judy Collins. Griffith performed duets with many artists, including Emmylou Harris, Mary Black, John Prine, Don McLean, Dolore, Willie Nelson, Dolore Bennett, The Chieftains, guitarist John Stewart, Willie Nelson, Willie Nelson, Adam Duritz, and Darius Rucker (lead singer of Hootie & the Blowfish). She has appeared on several other albums as background vocals.

Griffith suffered from serious writer's blockage since 2004, which culminated in the introduction of her The Loving Kind album in 2009, which contained nine titles that she had written and composed entirely by herself or as collaborators.

Griffith's bandmates, the Kennedys (Pete & Maura Kennedy), packed up their professional Manhattan recording studio and moved it to Nashville, where they installed it in Griffith's home after months of limited touring in 2011. Intersection was produced by her support group, including Pete & Maura Kennedy and Pat McInerney, and she and her co-produced her album Intersection over the summer. Several new original songs were included on the album, which was released on Proper Records in April 2012.
