Club career

Monreal, a native of Pamplona, was a member of CA Osasuna's youth system and made his official debut for his hometown team against Valencia CF on October 22, 2006, a 1–0 loss in La Liga. He played in ten league appearances in his first season, as well as two in that season's UEFA Champions League; following Navarrese's relegation to the UEFA Cup, he was suspended by fellow league side Sevilla FC.

Monreal was first-choice from 2007-08, retaining that status in subsequent seasons, with César Azpilicueta, the disputed starter in the other defensive wing, being the undisputed starter.

Monreal signed a five-year deal with Málaga CF on a €6 million transfer fee on June 10, 2011. In his first season with Eliseu, he began fighting for first-choice status, but the club finished fourth and qualified for the Champions League for the first time.

In a 3–2 away win over RCD Mallorca on January 27, 2013, Monreal scored his only goal for the Andalusians.

Monreal joined England on a long-term deal for an undisclosed fee, which Sky Sports estimates to be around £8.5 million. He was given the number 17 shirt and made his Premier League debut against Stoke City two days later in a 1–0 home win.

In a 2–1 win over Aston Villa on February 23, 2013, Monreal gave the assist to countryman Santi Cazorla to be the winner. On March 16, the Gunners' first goal was scored, leading to a 2–0 win at Swansea City.

In a shootout against West Bromwich Albion, he scored the deciding penalty, sending his team into the fourth round of the League Cup on September 26.

Monreal obtained the vacant number 18 previously worn by Sébastien Squillaci upon Alexis Sánchez's arrival in the 2014 off-season. In a 2–2 draw against Everton on August 23, he assisted Olivier Giroud's late equalizer. Monreal was granted his first call for the Spain under-21 team in 2007. In an eventual group stage exit, he started all of their matches in the 2009 UEFA European Championship.

Monreal was called up to the senior side of Macedonia for the first time on August 6th. He was at 3:2 away victory in Joan Capdevila's second game after winning the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa, and he lost in the country's second game on September 7th.
