Club career

Langerak, a professional footballer from A-League side Melbourne Victory, agreed to his first professional deal in February 2007. Soon after being put on loan to South Melbourne for the remainder of the 2007 Victorian Premier League season, he would gain game time and knowledge.

Langerak continued his duties as the Victory's third choice goalkeeper until Eugene Galekovic moved to Adelaide United. He made his Melbourne debut in the 2007–08 season against Sydney FC, despite allowing two goals, his results in the 2–2 draw was a promising debut.

Langerak became the second choice keeper with Galekovic making the move to Adelaide United. Victory signed Glen Moss of Wellington, New Zealand, with first choice Michael Theoklitos making his move overseas. Moss' first choice keeper came into play in the Melbourne team's first season in 2009 before Langerak seized his chance in the first team to become the team's first choice keeper for the remainder of the season.

Melbourne also confirmed that they had turned down a bid for Langerak from Germany's Borussia Dortmund, but that talks proceeded. Langerak revealed to FourFourTwo Magazine on May 4, 2010 that Borussia Dortmund had made a second, significantly larger demand for his services on the same day as the interview, but was rejected by Melbourne Victory.

Mitch joined South Melbourne on loan for the 2007 VPL Season. Langerak arrived in the club in disarray with their first-choice keeper injured and languishing near the bottom of the table at the point of relegation.

Langerak's solid results helped South achieve a mid-table finish and allowed them to gain valuable knowledge.

Victory in Melbourne received a third bid for Langerak from Borussia Dortmund on May 12, completing a four-year contract with BVB. Langerak, who joined Dortmund, became the club's second choice goalkeeper during the 2010–11 Bundesliga season and was a regular in matchday squads. Langerak said he wanted to learn as much as possible this season.

Langerak played his first game for Dortmund against reigning German champions Bayern Munich, where he put on a good showing. Langerak returned to the first team squad for the first time before being drafted by an unidentified Weidenfeller in Dortmund's second round DFB-Pokal game against Dynamo Dresden. Many flares were set during the game in Signal Iduna Park, sparking some fear; no action was taken and Langerak showed signs of jubilation with him after the game when he registered his first clean sheet in front of over 80,000 people.

Langerak came on as a 34th-minute substitute in the DFB-Pokal final against Bayern Munich on Tuesday, two years to the day. He came on for the injured Roman Weidenfeller who had feared rib damage after a match with Mario Gómez earlier in the game. Dortmund defeated Langerak's third game in two seasons at the club, and the cup and Langerak's third championship in two seasons.

Langerak defeated rivals Bayern Munich 4–2 on July 27, 2013 in the 2013 DFL-Supercup.

Langerak beat Augsburg 4–0 in the BVB opener of the 2013–2014 Bundesliga, where he kept a clean sheet in a 4–0 victory. Borussia Dortmund has won 7 league and Bundesliga games in which Langerak has participated.

Langerak made his Champions League debut against Napoli on September 18, 2013 after Weidenfeller was banned from playing. In an unsuccessful attempt to prevent Lorenzo Insigne from scoring, he broke two front teeth in a collision with a goalpost.

Langerak made the move to VfB Stuttgart in the 2015-16 season. Mitchell Langerak made his Bundesliga debut for VfB Stuttgart on May 7th, 2016, beating FSV Mainz 05 at home. In a 2-0 victory over Sanfrecce Hiroshima on December 19, he set a new J.League record by keeping 17 clean sheets. Langerak set a new clean sheets record in J.League on September 12, 2021, winning by 3-0 over Tokushima Vortis. In the 2021 J.League campaign, he set the new all-time record of 823 minutes without conceding a single point.

International career

Langerak was selected in the Young Socceroos squad to compete in the 2006 AFC Youth Championship. Langerak was given his first senior national team call-up in March 2011 by coach Holger Osieck as a member of the 17-man squad to face Germany in a friendly match.

Langerak made his Australian senior squad's international friendly against France on October 12th, 2013- a match in which the Socceroos were defeated 6–0, thanks to goals from Franck Ribéry, Olivier Giroud, Yohan Cabaye, Mathieu Debuchy, and Karim Benzema. Holger Osieck's last match in charge of Australia came shortly after the match ended, with his dismissal occurring shortly after. Langerak was selected in the 23 man squad travelling to Brazil for the 2014 FIFA World Cup, making his second appearance for Australia against Canada. He was also included in Australia's final list for the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, which was held in Australia, but he didn't appear in a single match.

Langerak announced his retirement from international football in May 2021, having served Australia eight times, in order to remain with his family during the COVID-19 pandemic. Langerak was out of international service in September 2022, just shy of the 2022 FIFA World Cup's 2022, after loosening travel restrictions.
