Early political career

DeWine began serving as an Assistant Prosecutor for Greene County, Ohio, and in 1976, he was elected County Prosecutor, spending four years. In 1980, he was elected to the Ohio State Senate and served a two-year term.

U.S. Representative Bud Brown of Ohio's 7th congressional district resigned after 18 years in Congress; his father, Clarence Brown, Sr., had been in office for 26 years before that. The Voinovich-DeWine ticket was quickly elected.

DeWine failed to run for the Senate in 1992 against former astronaut and incumbent Senator John Glenn. "What on earth has John Glenn done?" Glenn's campaign asked.
