Federico Fabian Pea (born March 15, 1947) is an American lawyer who served as the United States Secretary of Transportation from 1993 to 1997 and as the US Secretary of Energy from 1997 to 1998 under Bill Clinton's presidency.
Early life
Pema was born in Laredo, Texas, and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (1969) and Juris Doctor (1972) from the University of Texas School of Law, respectively.
Career
Pea was elected to the Colorado House of Representatives as a Democrat in 1979, where he rose to become Minority Leader in Colorado, where he became a practicing attorney.
Pea, a 74-year old incumbent, defeated William McNichols Jr., the first Hispanic mayor of Denver, who was re-elected in 1988. During his time as mayor in the late 1980s and early 1990s, he was instrumental in the Colorado Rockies baseball team's relocation to Denver in 1993.
During Clinton's presidential campaign, Peaa consulted Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton on transportation issues, but later, Clinton selected Pea to head the United States Department of Transportation.
The Justice Department conducted a preliminary inquiry into a California transit agency's award of a pension management job to Pea's former investment management company in 1995. However, Pea had severed ties to his former employer both before and during his time as Transportation Secretary. Janet Reno's probe was closed on March 17, 1995.
Despite the fact that he had intended to leave Clinton's cabinet for a single term, Pea served as the secretary of energy from 1997 to 1998. Pea led an organization of 16,000 direct employees with a budget of $18 billion during his 18-month tenure. He supervised the largest privatization in the United States Government's history—the $3.654 billion auction of the Elk Hills Oil Field, formerly known as Naval Petroleum Reserve No. 1. 1. He drafted the Clinton Administration's call for oil and gas development in the Caspian Sea region and aided U.S. energy companies' investments around the world.
Pea returned to Denver after being out of the Clinton administration. He joined private equity firm Vestar Capital Partners in August 1998, where he serves as a senior advisor.
Pea Boulevard, a freeway in Denver and neighboring Aurora, has been named after him. Peg Garcia, the mayor of Denver, was in charge of the initiative to build the airport. In addition, Pea's vision ("Imagine a Great City") resulted in the revitalization of Denver's economy, modernized Cherry Creek Shopping Center, neighborhood shopping initiatives, expanded library and performing arts center, and recruitment of the Colorado Rockies major league baseball team.
Pea is the father of three children: Nelia, Cristina, and Ryan Pea. Federico Pea's first marriage, Ellen Hart Pea, became final on September 10, 2001. Federico Pea married Cindy Velasquez on September 2, 2006. Cindy Velasquez, a retired broadcast executive for Channel 7, KMGH-TV, and KUSA-TV in Denver, Colorado, has a daughter, Pilar.
Pea was a National Co-Chair of the Complete Coalition. He is currently on many corporate boards and is active in many philanthropic groups.
Pea declared on September 7, 2007, that he would vote for Senator Barack Obama in 2008 and also serve as Obama's National Campaign Co-chair. Pea was unusual in that he did not support Senator Hillary Clinton, the wife of the president under whom he served. He was appointed to the Obama-Biden Transition Project's advisory board on November 5, 2008.
Pea was elected to serve as a member of Wells Fargo's Board of Directors on October 26, 2011. In June 2015, Pea was elected to the University of Denver Board of Trustees.
